A 74 F-350 would have a GVWR of 10,000 as most all 1 tons did until recently. It is capable of carrying much more. If your tagged for 20,000 then at least your legal from a plate standpoint. Doesn't mean your 100% safe though.

Personally I would never go putting 9000+ lbs in the back of a 1 ton truck. That is asking for an accident.
You got that right Patriot,I've done stuff like that,but off highway only,keep it under 3 tons in the bed and you should be fine,not that I'd be telling you what to do,but 70's fords used to be my thing.

My hope is that this will be the chip truck most of the time, and I will have more volume than weight. Hauling the gravel we did this past week should be a one time thing as it was for my partner's driveway, not for hire. My main concern is how many logs I can carry, when needed.
Since I know know it's a D70 I do feel a bit better about the Cummins repower I am planning. I'll definitely need to get a bigger driveshaft for it though.
