Anybody run the Alcan recently?

Heading down to Idaho from Anchorage in a couple of days. Will take the western access route. Alaska Highway from Tok thru Yukon and BC, then from Dawson Creek south to Seattle. Anybody ran it recently? How are the frost heaves? Hopefully the weather will continue to hold... Thanks in advance for any intel!

Drove it in July, drove all the way to Prudhoe bay. I'll just say I looked forward to the gravel sections that were under construction more than the pavement. I will never drive it again unless I have a complete air ride.

Ran it last year from Fairbanks, AK(Eielson AFB) to Mountain Home, ID. Took the east route, it's also the way I drove up from Omaha, Ne(Offutt AFB). I hope to be driving back up someday!!!

Now you know better than call it the ALCAN. The natives really got me when I called it that. I love the buckets beside the road at the heaves - - one flag, not bad - - two flags, better slow down - - three flags, frame buster. What a great trip. Loved watching you fly boys come over Anchorage heading straight for the mountain, then flip that sucker on its side and bank over for lining up with the runway. That happened multiple times every day right over the RV park - - wonderful. Great and memorable trip. Ready to go back - - 4 months up there is not enough time. However, would not want to spend more than 4 or 5 months in a row, and I get to name the months.

Yeah, I know it's the Alaska highway, but most know it as the Alcan, so i just called it that... I'm going down the west side because I have to pick up the wife's car in Seattle. I'd have towed it down, but I'm already towing the boat and slide-in camper. Looks like snow in the Ft Nelson/Muncho Lake area unfortunately. The rest is looking ok so far, weather-wise.

Mopeman- I'm on my way to Mountain Home as well. I'll have to give you a shout when we get settled in.

Thanks for the replies!

Kluane is gorgeous and has wonderful pullouts for overnight. Here was our campsite - - it was about 11:00 pm when I took this picture.

Beautiful pic there Bob! Kluane is pretty, but a heck of a drive around it! That's one BIG lake! I don't think it'll be that light at 11:00pm for my trip

Haha, I hope you don't have your hopes up about Mt Home, it's not like I thought it would be. Also, I hope you shipped your car a while back, mine took a couple of weeks to get to Seattle. That's why I took the east route. It only took five days of good driving, but you might have to take it slower, the weater will be closing in on you.

We came down there a few weeks ago and bought a house, so I already know Mtn Home is a dustbowl. We got lucky on the car, it only took a week to Seattle, and it's there as we speak. I guess we just timed it right...

From: Whitehorse, cultural hub of the universe..
Current highway conditions as of today sept 29, highway is reasonably good right at whitehorse, and up to prophet river south of fort nelson.

From prophet river to watson lake, heavy snowfall warnings have been issued, lots of freezing rain over slush/snow, slow going. Buffalo are on the road between pedersen creek and contact creek. Watson to whitehorse is intermittent rain/snow as reported by one of the OTR drivers last night at midnight.

Take it easy, trip should be good
