Question Aluminum Living Quarter Horse trailers????

Just want to know everyone's opinion on Aluminum LQ Horse trailers. I have looked at Sundowner, Exiss, Sooner. I am looking for a better fit and finish. Most issues I see is between the LQ portion and the door to the first stall. Won't close, sticky, or will not open and that is on new trailers. Gotta be better at a decent price.

Aluminum living quarter horse trailers

Spooler-We currently have a Featherlite 3 horse with a living quarters, 2 years old, and the best we've had (Sooner for 4 years before this, and Sundowner for 4 years before that but they had dressing rooms that we finished ourselves). This Featherlite came with a Featherlite LQ that we like alot, and we've had no quality issues except escape door to the first stall from the outside had to be redone as 6 bad doors got shipped to the plant and we got one (warranty from the door maker). Our Sooner had doors that the adhesive that held the skins on oxidized ("rusted" if you will only it's aluminum) and we're replaced by warrenty.
If we did it again, we'd buy used, search the internet and travel to look at the trailers as the loss in the first year or two is dramatic, and most people use them so little that they are essentially new. We've had ours 2 1/2 years and used for only 5 one week trips, but the trips were so much better than the years before with air and indoor bathroom (my wife loves it!!) We've seen several used trailers since that were 2-5 years old, almost new looking, and that we could have saved much $ in buying.
My truck has no trouble towing, overall weight of the truck, trailer, 3 horses is 19,000#, and I can get 11.5 mpg occasionally.
Lots of outfits for sale, look and try out the doors, equipment to see the quality of the individual unit and hopefully you can avoid the problems you've seen. Regards-Bill

Here are the trailers that are in the top of the line category. in no specific order. (this is in my opinion, im around quite a few trailers)
4-star
Bloomer ($$$$$)
Jamco
Sooner
Exiss

My favorites are 4-star, Bloomer, and Jamco.
In my personal opinion, sundowner is over-rated and all you are paying for is the name.
check out www.horsetrailerworld.com plenty of great information.

while exiss trailers are nice

ummmm have heard recently from three different people that exiss trailers after some road time tend to drop their a/c units into living quarters, dont have any personal experience, just some 2nd hand info.

I'd replace Sooner and Exiss, with Elite and Hart. Sooner and Exiss are light trailers, I've had both. I've also had Featherlite's, Hart's, Elite's.

I agree with those that like Featherlite. Great stuff at a fair price, and they will do 'special' orders so you can get just what you want.

However, if you want the ultimate in showy, shiny, 'wow where'd they get that!" check out Pegasus. www.Pegasusvans.com All that stainless! Plus they are horse people making totally custom trailers. Never had one (will soon) but did see one of their larger units at a show. Way cool. Check out their farm site also.

check out Turnbow out of ne okla I've pulled most of em over the years and this is the best built, a little pricey, they have a patented floor that will let the moisture drain. custom made to your order, duel wheels on some/ they have a reverse tow, horses face towards rear, with side loading, good looking trailor, check it out //jd

We're dragging a Merhow right now. It's a well built trailer. It has large stalls, sits up high. That has been a problem trying to load green horses that havent hauled much. Seasoned haulers hop right in. It has quality hardware. The Double Duty conversion is nice, but not fancy. It seems tight and constructed well, so far. Only problem has been with the fridge, Norcold, which is being replaced under warranty. Well pleased with this trailer. Our last was an Exiss. It pulled great. We had odd and end problems with the conversion on it. That's on the conversion co. though, not the trailer itself. Featherlite, 4 Star, Bloomer, Cherokee, all good trailers imo.

The more I use my Hart 3 horse slant the more I appreciate the fit, finish and build quality. Mine is not a LQ but Hart builds some really nice ones. Hart's are pricey but its usually a case of you get what you pay for.

I would highly recommend placing a call to these guys just North of Denver, Transwest Truck and Trailer, where I bought my GN Hart. They are huge and do EXTENSIVE work on all types of LQ's and they can tell you the +/-'s of all the manufactures. They also have a huge inventory if you can't find a local deal or they will custom order it for you to your exact specifications:

Take a look at this article on them:

we're pullin a 4 horse Featherlite, & it's a nice trailer, but I don't know if it was worth the $ (the g/f bought the dang thing!!) I've already pulled a vent off the top (my fault) & the drop down windows have had a couple issues with staying closed ( I think they adjusted them to fix it ? ) I personally would have gone with an Exiss for the $$, also not sure where you're located, but Adams trailers are built about 20 min. from my house ,(by Dalton Enterprises) & they are top notch as far as quality, I personally know the owner & they are great christian people who build really nice trailers, not sure how far their dealers span nowadays, but definatly worth taking a look at, & you can order just about anything you could ever want on them, take a look, www.adamtrailers.com, Dusty

I have a 3 hr GN Steel with front Tack. It is a 2000 model steel. It's a steel and I live by the coast so I have some rust issues. The running boards and fenders are perty rusty underneath ( No fixing it). Do you know if I can get repair panels for it??? Running boards and fenders. I have done body work and paint several times and I think installing them will not be a big issue. I need to give them a call. Thanks everyone for the info.
