5th wheel trailer tongue long/short

Why do some 5th wheel trailers have a long tongue/pinbox and some a short pin box? I was looking at 25' trailers and they had about a 2' pin box. I found a deal on a 28' 7600lb drywieght, 10300gvw, 5th wheel and it has a shorter pin box.

Will the 5th wheel sit closer to my tail gate at the bottom and closer to my cab at the top? Any clearance problems? I have a long bed with a reese 16k mounted 4" ahead of the rear axle.

Why the shorter pin box? I liked the idea of more clearance with the long pin box . Now im scratching my head at this short pin box. Im new to these 5th wheels and still learning

Pin box

Get one with a long pin box, because if you ever get a short box p/u truck you'll need the long pin box. The fivers with the short pin box, the kind that almost go straight down under the goose neck, are as a rule much heavier fiith wheels. If your new at this RVing thing I would want to stay light. waam Holland, Mich.

The extended pin box moves the front of the trailer away from the cab of your truck, sometimes eliminating the need for a slider hitch. If you have a long box you can go either way. I feel like if you can keep the pin under the trailer you will tow better. That's just my opinion as I too am new to this 5th wheel thing.

I went with a pin extender and a slider hitch for my trailer. Do not want to meet up with the ladder in a short turn.

Hmm ok... This 5th wheel is a 2000 nomad 28" and the drywieght is 7635. gvw 10300. That dry wieght seem kinda heavey for a 28'.

I was thinking 5500 to 6500 max dry.

The guy is selling this 2000 model cheap asking $8500 , low value is $11000 to $13350.

I was looking for something about 25' but its hard to find a used 5th wheel that is takin care of . All I have found is thrashed neglected junk!

You must be careful adding a pin extender to any 5er. It changes the leverage of the pin weight on the trailer's framework. Some manufacturers will allow it some will not. Most all 5ers will take a pretty good turn to hit the cab (on a short box). The slider is the most simple way to move both the cab corners, and tailgate away from the 5er.

Our 32' 5th wheel with GVWR-11.400 weighs 10,040 lbs with an advertised dry weight of 7640 and an unloaded kitchen cabinet sticker weight of 8200 lbs. I know my beer and hamock don't weigh almost 2k lbs! Best to take it for a test tow down to the nearest cat scale. Or farthest!

I will probably pass on that 5er. Im looking for something about 6500 lb dry at most . Ill be useing this trailer for hunting trips so I dont want a big honkin heavy thing.

Thought about buying it and reselling it about $ 2,3,4000 more , make some money on it, but 5er sales are slow. The 5er is a killer deal at $8500 asking price . The guy just wants to get rid of it and Im sure would take even less cash!

7600 is not a lot of weight for our trucks, even 3/4 ton. You have a long bed, which is optimal for towing. The pin box does not matter, with the long bed. If the 5er is way below market, buying may be a good idea.
Unless you plan to haul off road in Mud, it should not matter. I do not think there are many 5ers that way much less, unless they are real small.
A good place to shop & do research is pplmotorhomes.com .They are the country's largest consignment dealer. They have pictures, floorplans, prices, etc. Most of their rigs are in good to excellent shape.

7600lb isnt alot of weight?? Ok . Im new to 5ers ....this will be my first. Im not a just highway and park in a Roadside RV park type. I end up going into the boonys down dirt roads ,sometimes kinda rough, log roads, BLM land etc. Hunting camps and such.

Im thinking the lighter the better

Most of the smaller (SHORTER) RVs that I have looked at had a LONG long pin box, and ALL oF the big (LONG) RVs had a short pin box.

I have a short bed truck with a slider hitch.
I bought an RV with a long pin box.
It worked fine with the hitch in the forward position, but with it in the rear position, the back of the pin box would hit the tailgate in a turn.
I will probably never need to put it in the rear position, because I can turn pretty dang sharp in the forward position. But just in case, I bought one of those cut down tailgates so it would clear.
