Well the tire shop came out again with two more ST tires and 13km more down the road one of the new ones blew. I asked what the date on the sidewall was but it's trashed and unreadable besides the blizzard like conditions yesterday. He has given up and driving the 500 miles back to get a triple axle trailer even though I think he is within limits for the tandem it's just an extra 1000 miles of driving because of it.

I'm no advocate for ST tires since I've had my fair share blow out too, but let me just point out that Maxxis makes the "only" ST tire available which isnt made in China. I researched all ST tires and the Maxxis ST reviews so far are superior to any ST tire on the market. I recently purchased six of them. Yes they cost a bit more that the typical ST tire but if they last then thats cheap. I say this because I know there are lots of guys out there like me who want to but simply cant afford to convert to LT tires. I have a triple axle trailer which at the moment I cant afford the money for six new matching rims, six new LT tires capable of holding the weight, and lifting the trailer so the new taller tires and wheels fit.

I too switched to LT truck tires on my Toyhauler RV and love them. Not a problem one towing in any temperature. I've made several long trips with it in the heat......last summer it was 111 driving thru Arkansas, loaded down with ATVs, water on board etc...very heavy. No more ST trailer tires for me.

I recently purchased a Car Hauler trailer brand new. The manufacturer had just built it and it was waiting on tires/wheels. I told them DO NOT put the standard 15'' ST trailer tires on it. I wanted 16'' LT E rated, 10 ply, 80 psi, 2680lb per tire.......tires and wheels. I had to pay a little more for them but I know I got a good set of tires in the Kumho Ventures they put on it.

I think my 5er weight is about 13400 empty.
I haven't checked the 16" ST, E rated tires on it for the capacity, but they need to be replaced due to dry rot showing.
I am having a hard time finding a E rated LT tire that has a capacity for the empty rig let alone adding weight to it.

Don't forget the weight the tire carries is not the GVWR it's the GAWR. 13400 empty minus 20% for the pin weight = 10720lbs, you might even have 6000lb axles under there.

Wisky VI-
You may want to consider the Goodyear RST 16/235/85 Load range G, over 3,000+ lbs(All steel). My Alfa is 12k empty & has these on for many years. If anything ggoes wrong, Goodyear will stand behind them. It weighs almost twice as much as an E tire.

This thread has been an excellent read. I'm new to fiver pulling - just pulled a small TT for years. And I appreciate the experience related to tires shared on this thread.

We all win by talking about things even though some have different points of view, that's why we all don't drive white Dodge crew cab short box 3500 4X4's I'm glad you enjoyed the thread.
