5th wheel rv advice
Here is another option that someone had posted earlier. It's called the "Sidewinder" from "5th Airborne" hitches. It looks like a pretty neat idea also.

I've been lucky in that my setup has worked well for my shortbed, but as others have said,,,, I have to pay close attention when making an off camber sharp turn. Level ground is no problem for a lock to lock turn when moving forward, but close attention needs to be paid when backing up. So far, 7 years and no problems. A lot depends on the pinbox and trailer configuration.
If I were to go with a shortbed for my next truck, I'm sure I will go the Superglide route for a hitch. I've never heard or read about a bad experience from using a Superglide.

Before you buy a controller find out what kind of brakes your new trailer has. Prodigy (at least mine) will not work with elec-hyd systems. Brakesmart will. As for "going cheap", I've had zero problems with mine after roughly 200,000 miles of towing between 300 and 400 different trailers in all kinds of weather and terrain.
A few things I feel obligated to pass on:
RV manufacturers typically underestimate trailer/pin weights, sometimes significantly. You may find that your delivered coach is quite a bit heavier than the specs indicate. That said, a fifth wheel is much more stable and efficient at transferring weight to the TV. I've pulled two different 37' 5'ers (@13-14k+ weight) behind a '99 2500 and 04.5 3500 DRW. Without question, the DRW is more stable when passed by big rigs, but the 2500 is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, especially compared to a bumper pull rig (downright scary at anything over about 26' IMHO). BUT, and I do realize you probably aren't willing or even considering this option, my '99 Volvo VNL610 pulls my current 37' rig like it isn't even there, regardless of who is passing me. (Does get some interesting looks and calls on the CB tho)
I concur with having a slider hitch; it's one of those things that you may never really need, but if you do there is no substitute. From reviews I've read on Superglide, it is an outstanding setup.
IMHO, I'd do a little personal investigating on RV Direct, when I was looking for a rig a few years back, they had some customer service issues that steered me away from them. Much along the line of what you have experienced with requiring your trade prior to delivery; caveat emptor.
Best of luck on whichever rig you decide to go with, and please post pics!
