5er's & tool boxes

OK, I bet this been gone over and over, but I cant find a thread on it anywhere. I have a 01 2500 HO, with an 8' bed. I want a 5er but I'm concerned my tool box may be in the way. It is 18" long and sits about 6" higher than my bed... pretty much making my 8' bed a 6.5'. Also my truck is 4wd (stock height for a 4x4) and I'm hoping it ain't too tall. Am I out of my mind or these legitimate concerns? I'm sure given the nature of these trucks someone out there is pulling a 5er with a tool box. Let me know what to watch out for and any suggestions are always welcomed. Thanks.
Dave

I had the same type tool box as you have....after a few 90* turns on uneven ground I had torn up my box and trailer...so now I have a 5er tool box...they are bigger boxes that mount to the bed and are the same height as your bed top rail...I'll post a photo of mine as soon as I find where I put it

Re:5er's & tool boxes

Drafalske,
I have a huskey tool box that is about the same as what your talking about. Thus far, at a full 90 turn, on unlevel ground I bumped the front corner of the fiver only once. No damage to the toolbox but slight scrape to the front of the 5er. If I had to do it again, I'd get the tool box that pappyman is talking about. But as luck would have it, the tool box was purchased first, than the 5er. If you never have to make a full 90 than I would not worry about it.
Big dawg

Attached a pic of my setup. This happens to be an aux fuel tank plus tool box, but the principle is the same.

Bob

Re:5er's & tool boxes

I have a tool box in my shortbox but it only sits up about 2.25" and My trailer clears it on anything but really rough terrain and my truck is a short box. So far I have had no contact but I mounted a CB antena on the LH side and a Cellphone booster antena on the RH side of the tool box and when I see either antena move I know I am down to 2" before contact with the cab or the tool box.

Re:5er's & tool boxes

No toolbox, but I cram a whole lotta supplies and such just behind the cab. Have plenty of clearance to pull those 90's and don't even think about popping the back window out! I have just over 7 inches (what is an inch anyways) over the bed rails, gone over some wicked terrain, not damage to the truck or the 5er.
