3.55 ratio in one ton for RV

A friend of mine is looking for a late 2nd generation one ton dually for his 3000 lb. camper. He will also tow a light motorcycle trailer at the same time. One of the dealers he spoke to said the choices were 3.55 or 4.10 rear axle ratio in those units. Will a 3.55 work for him?

Thanks.

Brian

Heck yeah. He could tow that setup with a 1/2 ton or an SUV. Using a 1 ton diesel Dodge for that is kinda like swatting a fly with a sledgehammer, it won't matter what gear ratio he has.

You can pull a pretty heavy trailer with the 3.55's. It should be a perfect set up. The nice thing about it (because he's not towing, if it's a camper) is the 1 Ton dually. The power to move it is not even in question, but it is a heavy camper to haul in the box, so he'll like the dually set up!

Tell your friend he will be thrilled with the dually for for the camper, theres no comparo to a swr 3/4 ton. I have both 250srw and 350 drw and run my camper on either depending where were going, you wont even know its on the dually. BTW ,we haul the 2k camper and a 5500lb loaded stock trailer with an auto and 3:54s and its works great ,even get 14 mpgs.

If it's a stick, I wouldn't do it any other way. One tons are far more common with 4.10's though.

4.10's

My 3500 has 4.10's see is rather slow on the freeway to low geared but she is a rocket on hill's lot's of pulling power.

ya..no problem..no need for 4.10

with 6 speed, 70 mph = 2000 rpm which is perfect for long distance running. If i come up on a hill, just knock it down to 5th and it doesn't even labor at about 2500 rpm. Not many highway hills it won't handle in 5th.

My camper sticker is 3000#, but in real lif it's 5000# and I tow my Jeep or boat with zero issues. My buddy's do the same. one with 2500 and smaller camper, but 9000# boat..another with even heavier camper and a 22' jet boat around 7K.

With a large camper the dually is sigificantly better. The rear discs on 2001.5 up are REALLY nice to have. Camper package includes rear sway bar and contact overloads. I could use more spring with mine. I installed Timbren's, but it's not enough. May go Hellwig or extra leaf from spring shop.

I have 3.54s in mine and tow a 5th wheel weighing 10,500 lbs.

No problem. Did modify my trans to the ATS torq converter and valve body though.

The only differenc rear gearing makes is starting the load off on a hill, and what rpm it cruises at. I have 3.54 in mine and it has always started off well on a hill. The 3.54 will make you downshift sooner on a hill.
