2nd Gen. Mopar tow mirrors

I bought a pair of Mopar trailer tow mirrors last week and they finally showed up today. Only took about 30 minutes to install (would have been less, but I had to do a little customizing). My '01 Sport had power/heated mirrors and the 2nd Gen tow mirrors are manual. The kit comes with a plug that you are supposed to install in the hole left when you remove the power mirror ****. I was thinking that eventually, I'd want to do the 3rd Gen head to 2nd Gen base to put power mirrors on my truck so I wanted to leave the **** there.

When I went to button up the drivers side, I found out that the trailer tow mirror mounting base interferes with the power mirror **** and wouldn't left the door panel go back on. Luckily, there is about 3/8" of "dead meat" on the back of the controller ****. I trimmed about 3/8" of material off the top half of the back of the controller **** and everything now clears.

The difference in visibility between the standard mirrors and the tow mirrors is amazing. However, I can see already that I'm going to be spending some more money. Of course when you flip the mirrors up in the towing position, they are 90° from their original position and you have to readjust them.... then when you flip them back down, you have to readjust them again. If you don't have a passenger in the seat next to you to help adjust the passenger mirror, it's a major PITA.

Looks like I'll be doing that 2nd/3rd Gen. mirror mod sooner than later. I just need to do a little more research on exactly how to do to make sure I get the right stuff the first time. Anyone have any links to info on this mod?

Do a search, the info is all on this board. If you make the switch, let me know what you will want for the left over mirror heads. I leave mine out all the time.

I found a good write up and photo album on TDR.

Haulin'.... are you saying that you have tow mirrors now, but want extra manual heads? do you tend to break many?

I have the flip outs on mine. They have been on for 250,000. The first week I had them a truck clipped the drivers side and cracked the mirror. The other side has loosened up and needs to be taken apart to fix it. I just figured it would be handy to have a pair to repair these as needed. I go over some really rough highways constantly, I mean rough that you don't want to eat first, make you sick. So they are tough, its a lot of miles and bouncing.

Cool.... I bought these as the Mopar kit from a Dodge dealer in NY. They are brand new (well they've been on the truck for about 12 hrs. now, ) and would make excellent heads to replace yours. I just need to find a set of the 3rd Gen power/heated mirrors for a reasonable price......

So are flip out mirrors for an 01 available as power or no? What did you pay for a set of 01 tow mirrors?

I sent Dodge an E-mail about 1 1/2 years ago asking about the possibility of Dodge producing Towing Mirrors using the 3rd Gen Heated/Electric heads and the 2nd Gen Bases for us 2nd Genner guys looking for better mirrors.
Their Reply?

Not enough interest.

Well, I did the deed.... broke down and shelled out for a set of heated, power 3rd gen. tow mirrors. Once they arrive and I have time to work on them, I'll be doing the 2nd/3rd gen hybrid mod. I seldom have a passenger with me when I tow and it's just a PITA to adjust the passenger side mirror by myself when I flip it up. If I put together a decent write-up, maybe I can find somewhere on the web to host it.

Those may be towing mirrors, and they may be for a Dodge..... but they're just not the same thing as the factory flip-ups.

i agree these look like Ford mirrors or something. I like that when you have the dodge mirrors flipped out, the blind spot mirror is the right size, and in the right place.

I saw a set of those **** extension mirrors at a RV place . They are Humungas ! TOO BIG

I got a set of the **** slide on plastic mirrors. They are worthless and the mirror is small and doesnt stick out enough, and they vibrate.

One blew off some where off highway 80 in nevada. Then I had to shell out another 34 bucks for another.

Only thing they are good for is being legal I guess. And $65 bucks for a cheap hunk of plastic !

Those factory dodge fold out mirrors look good ! That sucks that they arent heated / electric though

Haulin, You said your mirror is loose and needs to be tightened, How do you do it? My passenger side is loose and all I can see is the ground. I have looked and can't figure out how to do it. Had the same problem with a GMC truck years ago and had to break the glass to tighten it up. Hope this is not the case.
