Mark Forum Read

Why is it that sometimes when I Mark a Forum Read it works until I leave the site and come back? When I come back to the site, the forums and messages that I previously cleard are now showing unread again...

Wild guess, if there aren't actually any new posts, it's something to do with cookies. Do you come back from a different machine? Different IP address?

I don't think it works on cookies. If I mark all posts read when I'm in work, then go home, my computer there picks up where I left off from work. It might be a personal record on the server for your user name. Something I do get on occasions is when I hit the "View New Posts", it says no new posts are available, even though maybe hours have passed since I last checked. I'm then forced to go to each forum and check for posts.

Nope, not a cookie issue. Same machine, same IP, etc.... I am guessing that the server has either a time schedule that it updates our records regarding viewed/not viewed messages, or there is an event that kicks this off, but it isn't just the act of clicking mark all read.

I've never had this issue before. Are you marking as read while you're logged in, then loggin out when you leave the site?

I've seen that problem as well.

I've found if I clear cookies, empty cash, clear history then exit IE, when I come back to the site it remembers what I've read.
Have to re-login of course.

If I don't do this and just shut down IE then reopen, the site looks like it did for my first visit of the day.
Same threads unread even though I marked them as read during my earlier visit.
Site remembers me so I don't have to re-login.

I've also found that the PM popup window only pops up for my first visit of the day.
If I leave the site, then come back later in the day, I'll have new PM's, but no popup alerting me to them.

Using the latest version of IE with all the available patches.

I too had a habit of not logging out here at home and just disconnecting from the internet (dial-up). Then it dawned on me that this was not clearing the cookie for the site like it does when you log out and unless you have your browser set to clear cookies after shutting down IE,,,,,,, the site can't remember what you've marked read. Since I started logging out (you'll see the message that states All cookies cleared!),,, I don't have that problem any more.

Logging out, heck no! Would that be the culprit? I mark as read, while logged in, and when all is done and said I just close the window or jump to another site. Then when I come back into the site, it doesn't remember what I marked as read. This doesn't happen all of the time, but at least a couple of times a day.
