Well, I finally got started on the project. I spent the last two days tearing off sheet metal, front and back. Next comes the cab. The 440, drive train, and running gear are going into a ramcharger. The crewcab is getting the cummins, np205, Dana 60 front, and dana 70 rear out of a totaled 92 w250. I am hoping to drop-in a nv4500, but money may make me use the Auto I have.

I appologize that it is technically not a 1st Gen., but since there were no 1st Gen. crews, I hope you will forgive me.

I keep wishy-washing on the new vs. used nv4500. High Impact has a kit for the swap that includes all but the pedal, starter, and some machining on the tcase, but it is $3800. But, you get a new tranny and don't need to worry about a core. The last thing I want to do is drop a grand for a rebuilder, then have to nickle and dime all the other parts together only to wish I had bought new.

Thanks for the encourac=gement people. I have been wanting to start for a long time. Unfortunately now that I have started, I will not be able to work on it for a couple of weeks. Having sinus surgery tomorrow. Doc says no lifting or bending for two weeks.

 

i got my NV4500 changeover kit from Standard transmission in Texas. It cost about $3000 including the core charge, the transmission had been upgraded from stock in a couple of crucial areas. that was a few years ago, I think it is cheaper now.

 

Was that a former BLM or National Parks truck? The Vista Green paint is a usually a dead giveaway. Nice older truck,good project,I like that your keepin the 440 too.

 

I assume it was a forest service truck. It was an original 360 auto w/fulltime four wheel drive. Front floors were rusted away, cab above windshield was rusted through, and the bottom of the driver's side doors were flappin' in the wind. I patched it up and painted it about 10 years ago. I used a 1975, 440 powered standard cab as a donor then. When gas was a buck, it was a fun truck.

 

I had one of those government surplus M880s before I had this truck. It had been a rural fire department rig, and it was the most gawd-awful glowing fluorescent yellow.
