Why is the #10 cam plate so much more popular?

all the tst plates i have played with have been cut from one piece of steel, as in no rivits. thoses all look to have the right profile for the # that is beside them[but look like copys to me]. you have to relize that you do not use all of the plate, just about 3/8th of inch on the bottom. a #8 has a real hard hit on the top end,#10 comes on pretty quick and backs off a bit on the top. the #6 has more rack travel than either a#10 or #8 and it is more mellow on the bottomend but slams the rack way forward when the pedal is on the wood.

Yeah, those are copies. But I also got a whole set for $250, AFTER I bought a #8 from TST.

Yell at me if you like, but you still won't get the smile off my face

Do install the gsk........you will not be disappointed..........the #10 and a gsk are a match made in heaven.........install a #10 and adjust to where your TC can handle it until you are ready to do tranny upgrades...........I ground a #100 for my 94 and prefer it over the #10 because it fuels harder up at higher rack travel but you do need an EGT gauge for this.........I would tend to ignore the peak power #'s when shopping for a plate, those #'s are not an accurate measurement of how the truck will perform.........the profile of the plate which dictates the fueling curve (read power curve) is much more important, IMO..........remember, those advertised power #'s are assuming the plate is in the stock position........

Great, thanks! I'm in a lot of stop and go, on both the freeways and city streets. It sounds like the #10 is the plate I'm after.

So, I need to set the governor lever at the very bottom (tip) of the #10 plate, correct? This is what I'm talking about. http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechLeverAdj.htm
The lower you set the gov arm on the plate the later the power will come on. If you can get it to come on at about 1800RPM, you're tranny will thank you for it.

If you are setting the plate near the stock location, the lever adjustment isn't necessary. If you have the 8 or the 6 with the taper at the bottom (shown top) tip, you can miss the plate and go under the tip of the plate. The 10 plate starts the taper below the idle setting in most cases and adjustment won't really affect the curve that much.

I have the TST/PDR plate and its all one piece, well made. Kit is complete with install template, screws, clamps, boost elbow and good instructions.

I found the AFC kit did help too.

Does anyone have a picture of a #4? I have a #10 but have considered the 4 for a little more power out the current pump.

Thanks,
Aaron

So it sounds like with the #10, fuel starts pouring on right from idle. Wow, sounds like it's tough on the transmission. Sounds like I need to slide the plate to the rear so I save the tranny at lower RPM's. By doing this, will I still have more top end power than with the stock plate?

clutch? blew up one 12" OFE w/ the #6 plate full forward, 370's, and stock turbo... Peter replaced it with a revised disk, and said I was on my own after that!

I've got about 20k on it w/ the flat plate and HX40... I think the slow spooling HX40 is the only thing that's keeping it alive by keeping the torque numbers down... I know I'm on borrowed time w/ it... a 13" FE is going in unless I hit the lotto and can swing a dual disk.

i put in a 3k kit and ground the plate to a #100 profile last night in a friends truck. 96 4x4 ex cab dually 5 speed. he called me this morning, couldn't be happier. i did shove the plate forward a bit. somehow the stock clutch is holding. but the truck does have 4.10 gears. but stock it was played out at 70 and would take it sweet time to hit 80. i ran it up to 90 last night on the test drive. i blocked the waste gate and it was hitting 36#'s of boost. but the egts will run up to 1500 pretty quick if you are just being stupid hard on it. but he knows when to back off.

.........Well said!.........that is how mine runs: can get hot quick - but not fast enough so as not have enough time to stick it to most other diesels and imports who want to play
