Where to set timing 98 215 pump?

Going to be bumping the timing this weekend. Was wondering where I should put it to find a happy medium between mpg, smoke, headgasket trouble, future mods, bottom end, top end etc...

Thinking 16-18

In the next year I hope to have 370's or EDMs. B-1 or similar turbo and I will be done at around 500 hp as it get to expensive for my blood from there on out.

More worried about hp then MPG, would like a decent bottom end but more concerned about top end. Also egt decrease is real important, as well as how it will react with future mods.

What would be recommended if I already had the 370's and a larger turbo?

I only want to do it once.

I am leaning towards 17 but would hear to hear the pro's and con's of 15-19 or so.

Thanks, Kurtis

15.5 for best all around performance and to keep the headgasket intact.

I read somewhere from jim fulmer that setting the timing to something in the 17 ball park with 370's worked better? than 16 or so for better burning as it is though 15.5-16* seems to be about right on stockers.

I tried 17 but I like 19.5 better. I have had the head cut flat and put studs in but it wasn't because of a blown headgasket like I thought when we pulled it apart. I would probably go at least 17 to 18.5. I don't know about with stock injectors someone with alot more experience will have to chime in. Good luck

Your engine isn't modified enough to handel over 15.5 and even that is all you will need for quite a while. With larger injectors, larger turbo, and a free flowing intake and exhaust. Then you could use 17* this is all you need until over 400 hp.
