I considered the swap too but since theres not to many wrecked CTDs in our area parts are very expensive. It looked like the conversion would cost the same as building a trick auto so... as to your question will a stock auto hold a smarty or a comp, I never had a smarty but the comp you can get away with for awhile if you use your head to control the fuel.

Basically the stock auto will hold about 40-50hp over stock for a while. A shift kit or valve body will help increase pressures and help a lot. But if you're really working it, you will need an upgraded trans.

Autos are like women... All basically the same but some are hign maintenance

Now that I've offended some.... Factory trannies vary greatly in strength and durability. Most will hold an EZ or a Smarty... with reasonable driving habits.

With just a Valve Body replacement ($400-500) you can have a great driving truck that should handle up to 375 hp!

If you get a built trans. by one of the 4-5 venders you can read about here , then I think and have read that the autos are stonger than man.

Mines held 500hp + for quite a while with a tripple disk TC and a valve body. I dont tender foot it either.

I've been holding 398hp for a few months with just a VB but it started slipping on me in OD the other day.
