I'm not sure, but it should be in the owners manual?

What type of fluid do these transmission use? Type 3 (7176) or Type 4?

My shop manual says 4 QTS for a service fill and 29-33 pints for an overhaul.

Type 4

4-Quarts? I would figure at least twice (8-10 quarts) as much If you remove the trans pan and replace the filter, but I could be wrong since I haven't done it yet.

I just did my '04 HO. Four quarts definitely IS NOT correct. I bought 12. Had one left. Use only ATF +4. Get it at the Dodge dealer. I paid less than $4 a quart. A pretty good price. Warranty requires +4. BTW, you only need to buy the filter. Don't buy a pan gasket. It's reuseable as is the differential. While you have the pan off, put one of the B&M trans pan drain plug kits in it. Definitely helps the next time. When you install it, don't overtighten the nut. You will ruin the nylon washer. I ruined mine. Couldn't find another so ended up brazing it in place.

If you have the money and tow alot, you might consider putting on a Double Deep Transmission pan from Mag-Hytec or PML. They will provide more fluid (4 extra quarts on MH) to help keep temps down and they provide a drain for ease of changing out the fluid. Also, if you want to add a tranny temp gauge there is a place on them to mount the probe.

As suggested in another similar thread, for the 1st service at least I'd drop the pan to clean stuff as well as doing a full flush. The way auto trannys are typically designed they don't have full flow filters, instead they seem to rely on collecting in the pan and not getting sucked up past the screen. They way they're designed they also hold a lot of fluid besides what gets replaced when dropping the pan. So, to clean the tranny and change all of the fluid you need to drop the pan AND do a full flush.

I did my own drain and fill twice over the course of 45K miles. Tranny continued to shift rough. Paid Dodge dealer to do the flush. They used B&G +4 product with an additive truck shifts better than when new?!!?
I asked about the regular Mopar +4. Service guy told me other companies make it but it's not available to the public. B&G also has their own warranty on the tranny if you use their product. All of this was endored by my Dodge dealer!!!?

My .02
