Water/Methanol Injection
#16
I hope somebody else can answer the technical questions. I have no idea what the pressure is or what orifice size the 625 nozzles use. I'm running an off-the shelf Snow Stage II kit, the only "tuning" I've done is turn up the pressure screw on the pump.
If you are using the water/meth for playing around on the street or on the dyno, I don't think you'll have any problems. Just make sure it doesn't cut in below 20 psi of boost, and keep the RPM up when you're playing with the 50/50 water/meth. You don't want it to bog down below peak torque RPM, that's where your peak cylinder pressures will be. If you are really worried about it, run 20% meth.

i did some reading and read that the walmart yellow windshield washer fluid is 40% meth and fairly cheap.
i usually pay 2.00 per gallon of 100% pure methanol from the local speed shop.
Found out that the 625 nozzles are 625ml, just need to convert that to a readily available nozzle.
Does your truck have a single or dual nozzle kit? As in, do you have a 2 stage kit for 18psi and then the other for a higher boost level?
How quickly can you run thru one gallon of fluid?
Any idea how high of a boost level i can take my HX35 safely?
thanks again for any help, just need to learn up on this some.

Dual nozzles.
"Stage 2" is just Snow's designation for the kit. The controller can handle more current and the pump is capable of higher pressure. The progressive controller has two pots, one for cut in boost PSI and one for full delivery pressure boost PSI. The controller puts out a 50% duty cycle at cut in PSI, and ramps it up to 100% as the boost pressure reaches the setting for full pressure delivery. Mine is set up to kick in at 20 PSI, and I get full delivery at 35 PSI boost. With smaller amounts of water/meth operation is totally seamless, but once I added a hybrid turbo and more fuel I was able to crank the pump pressure up higher. Now I can feel it kick in at 20 psi, it's like another turbo spooling up. Not a real harsh kick in the pants like nitrous or water/meth with a Hobbs switch for control, but you feel it come on.
I'm not real sure about how fast I run through the 50/50, since I don't use it in a steady state condition like towing. If I am out giving somebody a thrill ride (3 or 4 passes through 3rd and 4th up to about 70 mph) it will burn through almost the whole half gallon reservoir. That's probably about gallon per minute. A lot of guys run WW fluid with good success. I've run the cheap blue stuff and I had to back the pressure off some, but it still gave EGT reduction and more power than with the system off.
The HX-35 should be safe up to 35-38 psi. Running it to 40 psi on a regular basis will kill it. If you start having trouble controlling the boost, what worked for me was drilling through the wastegate passage into the forward scroll of the housing. The front half of my engine was making nearly 40 psi before this mod.

i have to head out here in a few minutes, i will post back a few questions tomorrow.
thanks for the tip on the split scroll housing, you had too much backpressure in the exhaust up front without the hole drilled?

Again, thanks for all your input! I do appreciate it!

I am running a similar set-up to "wannadiesel." As I recall, our water pumps are made by "Shur-Flo" and the model we have flows a maximum pressure of 220 psi. As "wannadiesel"
said, he is running the two (2) 625 ml. nozzles which if I remember right are set to flow that rate at about 150 psi. I have somewhat larger nozzles now due to the amount of fuel and air (twin turbos) that I am running in my truck. FWIW, I can run through a full GM Windshield Washer Tank (about one gallon) in a single quarter mile run. I am told that regular windshield washer solvent (blue stuff) like the you can buy at say "Wal-Mart" is has about a 20% concentration of a "methanol mixture" in it. I agree 100% with what "wannadiesel" told you about the boost levels on an HX-35. They will take more than 40lbs for awhile, but they are way "off their map" at levels above that and IMO are not making much power.
Hope this has helped you some.

I did more testing this weekend. I was curious about the results posted by Wannadiesel and had not tested since going to Mach 4's?
I have 5 gal Meth racing fuel that I have been reluctant to try...assuming if I add power, I will increase my existing EGT problem. And I did! I was unable to get the same results Dave got?? I guess each truck is a little different.
All results are with boost set on my B-1 at 45 psi. and EGT's idleing at 400*.
-Using no injection...EGT's reach 1500* in 6 sec...from 0 mph at WOT.
-Using 25% Meth/distilled H20 mix..EGT's climb to 1500* in 8 sec.
-Using straight H2O injection....EGT's climb to 1500* in 12 sec.
For some reason I get same results the heavy towers report....with injection system, EGT's peak and than drop off 200-300*. If I back off from WOT a bit...the drop is significant...but staying at WOT, I can only delay the climb to the Pyro peg.
I can't stay in it long enough (at WOT) to see if EGT's will drop off....But I definately get slower rate of climb..and lowest EGT's with straight H2O.

That's basically what I was trying to say. I don't see a spike then a reduction, EGT just climbs the whole time I'm accelerating.

Have you tried backing off the throttle a little for a sec or two when you get to 1400*...bet you get a drop!

My temps aren't leveling off on the street. I haven't pushed it past 1300 on purpose, I back off when I see the pyro pass 1200. I'll try backing off and then getting back into it to see if I get the effect you describe.

Got Oil Analysis Back
After probably 4-5 gallons H2O and/or H20 Meth (25%) run through my engine...results are same as always.
Fuel in Oil - <1% (by vol.)
Water in Oil - 0% (by vol.)
All reading are where I would expect using a Full Synthetic, 30 wt Oil.and changing oil & filters once @ 10,000 miles.
No sign of any downside from use of Snows Inj System!
The Less than 1% reading for Fuel in oil is either as low as they can test or standard for my truck. Has always showed <1%...even before adding HP and Snows Kit.

Glad to hear your results came back good. I'm anxiously awaiting the report on mine, the lab called to ask for my email address today so I kinda expected it to be in my email this afternoon.

The analysis report showed up in the snail mail today.
Less than 0.1% water in the sample. The water/meth system was used (several times ) on the way home to change the oil, but I drove the truck for 5 minutes after using the system. Seems like with reasonable care water (and methanol) contaminating the oil is a non-issue. Methanol evaporates a lot faster than water, and there was practically no water in the oil.

rjohnson and wannadiesel:
Thanks for posting all your numbers!
They certainly are encouraging for those of us that are running the water injection!
I need to send off a sample of mine too.
