Water / Methanol Injection

Well guys I installed a Snow Boost Cooler on my 02 24v on Friday. I got the high performance pump and the two stage system. The first stage was set at 25lbs of boost and the second stage was set at 40lbs of boost. I used the nozzles that were provided and set up a 50/50 mix of methanol and water.

It's about 2:00 A.M. and I'm crusing down the highway. I turn the switch to the Snow System on and my TST box on #9. In 3rd gear at about 50mph I press the accelerator and watch the boost rise to 25lbs of boost and it slams to 55psi. This darn thing is flying and my temps are rising MUCH slower than before. At 115mph I let off the accelerator and slow down to 50mph. My temps cool to 500 degrees and I press the accelerator again. This time when the boost hits hard I hear a loud fluttering noise. I slow quickly to 40mph and hear my guage tone go off and a check guages light comes on. I look and my charging guage is on zero. The first thing that comes to mind is a broken belt. I stop the truck and turn it off. When I get out I see oil all over the drivers side and when the hood is opened there is blackness everywhere. The head gasket has almost completely blown out of the front of the engine. Everything is covered in oil.

I wanted to share my experience with you. In my ignorance I installed this system without thinking of the increased pressures involved. I have ordered an O-ringed and ported head and heavy duty studs from Don M. I should have waited to get set-up properly before adding the Water/Methanol injection system. This product really does what they say and now it will be a while before I can enjoy it's benefits and my truck again!

I seem to learn my lessons the hard way but at least I'm learning!
Come on Don M.!!!!!!!!!!

When Don said a drunk truck is a happy truck, I don't think he was referring to a happy drunk stock headgasket. I think it makes them unhappy.

Hopefully there's nothing metallic that went through the engine when the gasket popped. What brand headstuds are you getting through Don?

Hey Jamie, what did you decide on your head gasket?

In all seriousness, thanks for posting since it makes it easier to keep mine in the box until I see Don in Feb. brandon.

That's really the reason I made this post. The Snow system does work but anyone thinking about using one for racing or just high performance should take precautions. I think o-rings are an absolute must. It was fun as H@## for a while. Now I have to pay to play.

That's odd that you kicked a gasket, I'd be willing to bet there was more than just the water meth involved, like something you didn't know about that would have never shown it's face without the added boost and cyl pressure....we may never know.

Jim,
You are probably right. I'm running a QS B-1 with Mach 3 EDM's, TST PM3 Comp, Stacked EZ, and Tial External Wastegate. My boost pressures were running 53 to 55 pounds without the water, I'm sure I was close to blowing the gasket anyway. I had already ordered an O-Ringed head about a week ago. I think the Snow System is everything it is suppose to be and is going to be awesome when I get my new head, cam, and B1- B2 Twins. I just wanted to lend caution to people like me that are on the edge and need to O-Ring anyway.

Your right you probably were on the edge with Cyl pressure, stacked boxes and adding Methanol I bet jumps it way up there. Shame you can just yank the head and send it to Hasiley for a Fire Ring job and a set of 12mm studs, swapping heads is expensive. That's sure a nice combo you have going there but your like me when you get the Twins on your going to have a fortune in it.

The combo of hot boost and the water/meth will raise the peak pressure to very high numbers. As evidenced by your gasket completely blowing out and not just seeping a little oil or water. Any single turbo is making hot boost at 55 PSI.

I just saw a piston from a Tractor Puller fella that was running meth injection. He made it about 100 ft and the thing melted. It splattered aluminum flakes all over the hood and him as it exhausted through the stack. Sounds like lots of fun anyway.

With the cylinder head and camshaft I am sending to Meacham his troubles are over. Good airflow in and out to get that hot air outta there and not leave it behind will do wonders. The o-rings I use will hold dern near anything. Well maybe not a detonating engine
