Upgrades for a 12 valve auto
Upgrades for a 12 valve auto
My warranty will finally be running out within the next couple of months and I would like to start making some modifications. Right now, the truck is basically stock with the exception of a K&N filter and straight pipe. With the auto tranny, I'm hesitant to do extensive modifications. I've been thinking about adding the following:
1. Boost, pyrometer, tranny guages
2. Scotty air system
3. TST #8 plate
4. 4" stacks
Let me know what you guys think. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Kenny
Re:Upgrades for a 12 valve auto
In terms of "bang for buck" I would forget the air system for now and go with Governor Spring Kit. It makes the truck really nice while towing. If I couldn't pull a hill in OD, and had to shift down to 3rd, it had plenty of power, but just kind of sat at 2500 rpm due to the stock governor springs defueling. That really limits your speed on steep hills. Egts are not an issue with my setup at all, which is basically what you are looking at, so I think for now the scotty system would be a waste of money. Have a good one. Oh, one more thing, my exhaust is completely stock, with cat still on. At our fueling level I don't think exhaust is a huge issue, but if anything you should have even lower egts even with the stock airbox. Jcamper
Re:Upgrades for a 12 valve auto
I'll second what JCamper suggested. Piers said I could have probably gotten away with a #6 plate with the stock auto but I decided to play it safe until the "tranny fund" grows a bit. You could call Piers at Piers Desiel Research or Rod at Wildcat. Either one will give you great advice and not try to sell you something you don't need.

Pretty good advice so far, so I'll throw in $0.02-

Gauges first.

If you're fairly tool-handy, you can put in a shift kit for $100.00 + shipping. Not a high power cure-all, but it will let you get away with more.

#6 plate

3K GSK

Then maybe the Scotty II air system (consider it almost necessary if you'll be towing much).

Have fun!
Re:Upgrades for a 12 valve auto
yes, definately get the governor spring kit. you shouldn't have to worry too much about the transmission. the main problem to worry about is the lock up clutch. don't slip it for a long time (like up a long hill) or then you will have problems quickly.

Tom
