Another boost elbow question

What if you just plug the boost elbow tap, and plug the waste gate hose so that the waste gate is inoperable. What would happen then?

Re:Another boost elbow question

Lots of boost and out of your efficiency range I would guess.

Re:Another boost elbow question

yea. two things you risk: first, beyond the optimum efficiency of the turbo, all you accomplish with higher boost numbers is lots of ETGs and very little HP increase. And, at the same time, the poor impeller is spinning faster than it is supposed to.

best approach is to wastegate at the top of the efficiency band -- for example, wastegate at 32 psi for a stock HX35. Piers makes an adjustable boost elbow (just an elbow with a set screw in it), so you can play and tune 'er up to wastegate where you want. maximum fun, minimum risk ;D

Gonna have to look up Piers.
Just got back from a 600 mi. pull ;D
Got the EGT's up to about 1200 once, (Lugging )
Mostly ran about 900* And 1100-1150* in hard long pulls.
But boost maxed out around 24*
Running DD box and boost elbow
Is the adjustable elbow the answer.
Sure would like to see 30* of boost ;D

Re:Another boost elbow question

Which way do you turn the screw to increase boost? How sensitive is it (i.e. 1/4 turn = 5psi +/-)?? I need a few more pounds to help EGTs.

A 99 has an HX35.
If you plug it with a pipe plug, basically your waste gate will no longer function.

With an Edge EZ and 275 injectors, you will not overspeed your turbo.
You will still be plenty in the "effeciency" range of your turbo.

But, the elbow that was supplied with your Edge EZ will work almost the same way.

--Justin

Re:Another boost elbow question

I had an HX 35 stock that had the waste disabled that made 40 PSI for one summer.

I haven't gotten mine yet but I'm guessing you can screw the thing in so far as to approach a completely disabled wastegate.

vssman: Guessing here (since I don't haver one in my hands), but I think that turning the setscrew in would cut off the flow of air through the wastegate and increase the amount of allowed boost. backing the screw out would open up the wastegate air flow and decrease the amount of allowed boost. I have no idea how sensitive this thing is.
