Twins in Cali

For those of you who are running twins, how many of you live in California and what are you doing every two years when its time to get your trucks checked and go before the smog gods. I am reading that we wont be able to pass when it comes to the visual inspection because they are after market and not OEM...

Years ago I had a hopped up dodge gasser and when it came time to smog it, I would take about five hours and put all the stock carb, intake, headers, and exhaust back on.... Go get the smog done and then go home and take another five hours to put all the go fast goodies back on and then go another 2 years till I had to do it all again..... But I am not thinking that this will be as easy because I'd have to change out injectors, turbo's, manifolds, exhaust.....

If it has a CARB number, then you're fine with aftermarket parts.

If not, I just hope they don't rake you over the coals.

Do the after market turbo's have CARB numbers on them, because if both turbo's are numbered then i cant see how they could fail it....

Do turbo's have CARB numbers on them, this is the question...

This is a sticky wicket..... The smog law stipulates alterations of any smog related emission components so therefor changing the exhaust, intake, turbo, and many other engine components are OK to alter or replace. Any addition or alteration of any electronic engine control is not OK. The problem us 2nd gen Dodge Cummins guys face is that there was ZERO emissions components installed on these trucks. Matter of fact the engine vents directly into the atmosphere. What more "polluting" can you get? If the turbo isnt listed as a "smog related emissions component" then you should be able to have as many as you want and not be bothered by smog laws or any smog tech. The other problem we face is that most smog tech are completely ignorant of how the smog law reads and call ANY modification to these trucks illegal, having people reinstall stock exhaust and airboxes, etc. This isnt to say that smog techs are morons either but they what they know is merely what they're told by the law and the diesel smog law is too vague and leaves way too much room for personal interpretation or judgement by the tech themselves. In reality the 2nd gen Dodge Cummins trucks ('98.5-'02) have no business being in a smog shop but since they fall under the '98 and newer model year smog requirements, we will be fighting smog techs who unknowingly are failing trucks which should be passing. My advice is to visit your local performance diesel shops and ask them where to smog your truck or move to a more conservative area in this great nation whereby there's more leniency to such stupid laws or maybe no smog law at all.
