turbos, turbos, turbos?

This developed off the 500 hp thread, since this also may emcompass the oem turbo I didn t put it in hi perf, feel free to move it though if you think it should be. I made a comment about I did not perceive many turbos avalable for the ctd that I guess was wrong
. I have alot of experince with other turbo cars, buicks, twin turbo sbc's etc, even a turbo bike, and I havn't been able to desipher anything on ctd turbos? Im used to compressor maps, compressor wheel sizes, turbine housing sizes, compressor housing sizes, turbine trim wheel etc...and don t see anything in ctd turbo that seem to refer to anything particular?

hx 35 is oem right? If so....is the compressor map available? what ar ratio is it, what siae is the compressor and turbine etc.....

or list a bunch of numbers and get as close as possible with a discription...

hx 40? hx 50?

What are the others? How about the twins? what sizes are they using?

1320 the stock turbo on your truck is a hx35x12cm & there are more turbos out there than you can shake a stick at.I personaly am a fan of kurt yardleys turbos he makes several ranging in low to very high horsepower applications. You can get ahold of rod at wildcatdiesel & he can explain all the differant turbos he has to offer or maybe they will chime in here & let us know.(kurt are you out there)?I run one of kurts b1 standard housing turbos & i can tell you they work & are tougher than nails..hope this helps.kurt.ps these are some of kurts babys..

Re:turbos, turbos, turbos?

So what does the disignation mean?

hx? 35? 12 cm? I think I know that the 12cm is relative to the exhuast housing size? but in all other turbos its a ratio from the smallest point to the largest like .63, .82, .96, 1.20...???

What is the 35? just a number or relative to compressor wheel size?

Re:turbos, turbos, turbos?

Good links, but so far it seems no one really knows what they are writing. A 12 cm exhuast housing? Well I can t find anything that defines what that measurement is? Apparently a 16 cm exhuast housing is bigger, but what is 4 cm bigger?

Anybody have some links to compressor maps of any oem or after market turbos like the hx40 or 50?

Re:turbos, turbos, turbos?

When people talk about a 12 cm housing, they mean 12 square centimeters of area for the exhaust to pass through. More area means less restriction, but it also means that the turbine spins slower for a given volume of gas flowing through the turbo. That means that my H1C with the 21 square centimeter housing is turning really slow at a given exhaust flow compared to an HX35 with a 12 square centimeter housing, but the HX35 is causing more backpressure (unless the wastegate is open).

1320,

You need to get ahold of "Diesel Freak" he's been researching turbo's for a long while. He's not biased to any turbo (He does like his PDR '40 though) He has done alot of research, and is very knowledgable with A/R ratio's, Compressor MAPs and is just on the scene with turbo's. To the best of my knowledge he deosn't work for any "high performance" company, he just did research and put facts together.

I'm interested in what turbo's are out there also. The only people I know making reliable turbo's are PDR (Piers) and Kurt Yardley (Kwik Kurt).

Good Luck!

Merrick Cummings Jr

If you are talking about the Switzer S-3..its a tough lil turbo. I have ran one with a larger compressor wheel. Its for sale and has 600 miles on it. PM for info.

Here is my latest monster. Its a HX55 with a 13cm non wastegated housing. It also will bolt up to a HX40 down pipe.
This thing spools like crazy for such a big charger. 8)
See turbo here!!
