Transmission upgrade
I drive a 2002 Dodge 3500 CTD with 47RE automatic transmission, bone stock. I am thinking about a new heavy duty torque converter, upgraded valve body, maybe some electronics to control the TC lockup. Anybody have any ideas, am I starting with the right components? Any comments on product quality of different companies?
Yes, you are looking at the right stuff. A good valve body, and torque converter will make all the difference in your transmission, and help it live a longer life. The stuff to do it isnt cheap, but well worth it in my opinion. A good triple disc converter will cost you around $1200, and a valve body around $450. My brand of choice for transmission upgrades is Dave Goerend( www.gbtransmissions.com ), but I also would not hesitate to go with DTT, HTS, or suncoast. Do a little searching uder each of those names on this site, and you should be able to decide which company you want to go with. Like I said, they all make quality stuff, and I think you would be happy with any of the 4. Your transmission will be much more efficient, and as long as its in good shape already, it will probably hold 400hp with no problem with just those few upgrades. Good luck!

On Edit: I see you are running stock power. Depending on what your future power plans are, you may not want to spend the $1200 for a triple disc. Goerend sells a good single disc for $650(100k mile warranty), and DTT also only sells single discs(they dont believe in the triple disc design) that are a little cheaper than most triples. My guess is that a single disc and good valve Body would probably hold 400hp, its just that the stock tranny internals will be getting pushed hard after that. Just decide what you want out of your truck in the long run, and talk to any of the vendos above about what you need. They will shoot you straight.
