Trans heat exchanger

Trans heat exchanger

How important is this? I think right in the middle of fabbing up my twins and I think I can clear it but it is a big pain. I have heard that people pull the exchanger when going twins.

I read a tread on the tdr about a guy who deleted his exchanger and went with one of those cooler/fan combos. His tranny temps skyrocketed and he ended up putting the exchanger back in the circuit. I would say that you should try to keep it or you might be trying to fit in 5 other coolers or some other ridiculous fiasco to keep the trans cool.

Switch to a manual? I know thats what is keeping with a single charger. Although I did read some where of a set that did clear the heat exchanger.

Well I think I am going to keep the exchanger. I have it cleared by about 1cm. I didnt realize how important this thing is but I am not going to take any risks in this heat, it was 115 yesterday and I was working on my truck

What comes close to the heat exhanger? The turbo housing or the pipes?? I used to live in Chandler, just north of Riggs road on Alma School. Appts next to the Safeway complex.

If you are that close to the heat exchanger you should use some thermal wrap or the like on it, you don't want to import the heat there

105* here in Utah.

Around town my temps get up to 190. Jump on the freeway and they go back to 150.

No heat exchanger, double deep pan.

I am sure pulling something heavy I will get past 200. I have an extra cooler sitting on the bench waiting for me to install it.

The heat exchanger does two things, it heats cold tranny fluid and cools extremely hot fluid. When I ran the heat exchanger my temps around town were always 180-190* and even on the freeway they did not go down. It was like the tranny fluid temp would always match the coolant temp.

Well, that's the purpose of this gimmick. Tranny likes it best around the same operating temp as the engine.
And it does hate sudden changes of the temperature too.
A good use for the heat exchanger in winter is to let the truck idle in drive for a bit. EGTs are OK to avoid gumming the valves and the heat exchanger will warm up the engine coolant.
(But you need to be careful that the truck won't hit the road on it's own )

Piers Literature on their twins says the heat exchanger has to go. They claim, on an after market tranny, thay have expirienced no problems without it.

I the intake housing is real close to the exchanger. If it was exhaust that would be another story. 2500CTD I am on Ray and Rural. I am thinking about getting the exhaust housing and hot pipe HPC coated to keep the heat down even more.

I have had mine out since I put on my twins and can say it does help alot however since I put a fan mounted under-bed cooler on, all is well I replaced the factory cooler with a B&M (Long)8.5" plate style cooler in the stock location and mounted a 12" B&M plate style with a 12"fan under the bed. The coolers are a low presure drop design(LPD) so they bypass much of the fluid while cold. It still can get hot if i'm in stop and go pulling a load but once in lock up she drops real fast. One good thing about losing the heat exchanger is the engine temp dosent go up with the high trans temps.
