Torque Converters.
Torque Converters.
A transmission shop is rebuilding a transmission for me.
They are putting in a Precision Heavy Duty Low Stall torque converter. It only has one lock up clutch plate, but Precision seemed to think it would meet my needs for what i do.
I have an Edge Juice module on my truck. I usually only drive it in the 3rd power setting.
Has anyone ever had any experience with these converters? Are they good?
Also they are putting in a Transgo Shift Kit.

I'm sorry I don't have any info for you, but I have a question; how much are the parts you are getting installed and how much for the total rebuild? I'm in the same boat getting a rebuild and just want to know what I can expect to spend. My local tranny guy quoted me at $2,800 total for a tranny rebuild with shift kit and heavy duty low stall torque converter.
If the TC doesn't have the billet front cover don't get it. the stock ones are weak and flex where the tabs are welded to them.
Do a search on Torque Converters there's lots of reading on them.
I have the TCI Maximizer from Jegs and it is working great, it has the billlet front cover, TCI has been building TC's & Trans for race cars for ever so they must know what they are doing.

There are many guys running single disc clutch converters without the billet covers, with success. It is about experience!!! and Knowledge.
Many drag racers find that TCI is a poor choice, unless the converter is made for their specific combination.
I had a TCI in one of my Dodges behind a Cummins and it failed. Customer service was NO help. It cost me quite a bit to get my truck running again.
Be careful.

I had a local shop rebuild mine with a billet single, shift kit, etc... Make the long story short the torque converter did not stall low enough for me, was only making 280/760 and I couldn't keep the converter from slipping in lockup. Had other stupid problems that really shouldn't have happened. I wound up fixing it with Goerend parts, triple disc converter with a valve body/billet front lever and I'm holding 350/760 now.
Hey 99dodgediesel02,
At least they are telling you what converter they are going to use, the shop I dealt with wouldn't tell me. I will give them credit, they gave me a brand new converter in exchange for my old one after the warranty was up, but I still don't know who's it is.
Say what you want, sure i would have loved to get a triple disk from one of the big boys, DTT, Goernds or other but the $1K difference in price was my wallets deciding factor. I run the crap out of my truck on 5x5 in a DRW and hasn't slipped yet, i even ran a Smarty stacked on 8 and no slip just scared the crap out of me with all the crazy power. I'm sure the BD valve body helps a lot too.
What it all comes down to is what you can afford. When i step up into the High Horsepower i will of course get a new trans to match, but for now the TCI works great.
I don't want to start a trans war but i don't buy into all the hype that unless they are a diesel only trans builder they don't know what they are doing.
The TCI has the billet cover and is built for a diesel not a gas engine.

.....that said I chose to call Dave after a few conversations with member McMopars here. He, like myself, can build a trans, but needed some "tips" on where to make it stronger. Dave was very upfront about what I needed for a trans and actually was steering me towards a single disc for my light mods and towing power application. I only went with the triple as it would give me room to grow in case I increased the engine power. True, I may have payed more, but I KNOW where to call him and will know WHO I'm talking too when/if I need any help. Try that with TCI.
Ok Fellas lets stay on the topic of the original post!!
I just offered my advice on what i have and works for me. Read my original post and see where I got it.
No need to brand bash here take it somewhere else.
99dodgediesel your gonna have to do some research on this one seeing that it is such a touchy subject.

If you're talking Precision Industries, they made the parts in my TC. PI supplies machined (billet) components to many builders.
I had a single disk and it worked good up to around 400 hp. I slipped it once and got out of it. I have two four disk convertors alike in two different trucks, one the 02 with hybrid turbo. The other one is in the 97 with twins and some fuel going to it
. The one in the 02 seems real tight even under full power. The 97 starts getting loose with 65 lbs. of boost pushing it.
One convertor is not a fitall for all trucks, my 97 needs alot tighter convertor to hold the extra torque the truck makes. I'm real happy with the 02, it pulls hard for what it is.
I wouldn't be afraid of a single but if the itch starts creeping up on you it's some money and time down the drain to switch to a multidisk.

Whoever ends up providing you parts or building your trans 99dodgediesel, just be up front with them on how you are going to use the truck. Converters will be different from a "tow" to "go" set up. I simply wanted a set up that would pull my toys and that's what I built around.

I recently got a quote from my local transmission guy for a rebuild of my transmission. He said that the Precision heavy duty is the torque converter he is going to use. After you get yours back and drive it a little while could you give me some feedback on if you like it or not? He seems pretty confident in the product, but i would like some real world facts.
Thanks!
