tire size?

recently purchased a 1997 12 valve extended cab long box. im in need of some ne tires pretty soon and wanna go a ways bigger than stock. i want to go with 315/75/16 mudders. i was told that they would rub hard on my truck even though it has a level out kit in the front end. a friend of mine has the same body style truck except a 98 and has 315/75/16 wrangler MTR's on it with just a minor rub when he turns sharp. any advice would be great. TIA

4x4?

Mine rubs slightly with 255/85/16 (33x10) No lift, no level.

You are talking about a 35x12.50, so you would be looking at new wheels too? I would say some rubbing will occur no matter what, but with the right backspacing and a gentle attitude towards bumps...you might just be okay.

I'm running 305/70/R16's with no level kit, and they don't rub at all.

I think it would depend on your offset of the wheel for the 315's, but there are A LOT of guys running 315's with a level kit on here with 4.5" backspacing.

yep its 4X4... and no im gonna stick with stock wheels. the actual size is a 315/75/16. i was told by the dealer they will fit on stock rims but 35/12.5 is just the numbers of actual diameter and width that i got from the website. i wish i could figure out for sure before i buy em other wise i get shafted with about $75 worth of mouting and balancing if they dont fit. if not im thinkin 285's or 305's will have to work. im hopeing i can get my buddy to swap rims n tires in the front just to make 100% sure... i would hate to spend 700 on tires and have to return em

I know the size well...have them on my Jeep. I don't see them fitting on a 6.5 inch wide wheel? I guess they might, but it is definetely not what the maker recommends. I would say to stick with a bit smaller tire if you're not gonna change rims.

I know a 295 will fit. Had them on my 24v with leveling kit and a 16x8 Mickey Thompson wheel. The tires actually measured 34.1" when new.

Your factory wheels will NOT fit a 315 tire. If you have the 16x6.5s, then even a 285 is too big!

If you have the 16x7.5s, then a 285 will fit, and you shouldn't go bigger than that.

I think you should concern yourself less with what rubs and more with what fits the wheels if you are sticking with stock.

If you can find a set of the 01-02 alloys for cheap, they are OEM wheels that will fit a 315 size because they are 16x8.

A 1500 won't have the same wheels... per say... not sure on the width of the steelies... for the 1500 or the 2500. But I've got 315/75/16 Cooper Discoverer STTs on the factory alloy wheel(8" wide) and no lift or leveling kit of any sort and I only rub when the wheel is at or **** close to full lock.

I thought the steelies were 7.5" wide? How wide are they?

Re-read the thread and have clarified the various wheel widths. There is a set of alloys in the classifieds for $200 I think? I was thinking about picking them up to put some E-rated 265s on for towing.

You can physically fit a 315 on an undersized rim without much difficulty. But you give up all tire warranty and wear will be terribly uneven.

There are guys running 285s on 6.5" wide wheels. The tire companies say this is improper. People do it anyway.

Same thing for a 315 on a 7.5" wide wheel. Tire company says you need at least 8" wide, ideally 10. But people do it all the time, even though it's improper.

So when I said "it won't fit" I meant "it won't fit properly". I didn't feel the need to add "proper" because in my world doing things the wrong way simply doesn't exist.

i dont like doing things the wrong way either... thats why im here asking these ?'s because i know this stuff is new to me, and i would rather spend a little time doing some research rather than screw myself in the long run. i just didnt think they changed the rim size between 97 and 98 thats why i was wondering.
