Push the pin in on the back of the pump at TDC. This will ensure the pump is set at TDC and stays there . The pin is behind the pump kinda next to the block . You will have to have someone push in on it while you bar the engine over. Make sure you stop barring when the pin pops in place, otherwise you will knock the tip of it off and it will fall into your timing case .
Good luck and let me know if those instructions arent clear enough so I can see if I can help you out some more.

There is also a pin located in the pump! Do not remove the pump untill you "lock" the pump with the pin! It is located on the side of the pump that faces the drivers side fender. It is a large hex head cap that needs to be removed. This is done after you set the timing pin on the pump sprocket.

So as it goes, you bar the engine over until you get the timing pin to go in on the pump sprocket (as described in previous post or do a search on "timing pin).

Next you go to the side of the pump and and remove the large hex head cover. Get ready cause some oil will leak out (1/2 quart?) Behind that hex head cover is another pin. Mine is white plastic. Pull that out, look inside the hole with a light and look for a raised tab. The pin that you just took out has a slot in the back end, you use that slotted end to insert back in the pump and it fits over the raised slot to lock the pump in place. Put hex head cover back on and remove the pump. This locks everything in place so you can put it all back to the original position.

If you do not see the slot, then you timing is way off, but if truck runs ok, then you will see the slot.

Don't forget to turn the pump pn around and pull the sprocket pin back out before you restart.

Hope this helps, good luck, Kevin

Make sure you break the nut lose on the pump gear before you engage any of the two timing pins. Once that is broke lose then you can engage the pins. You will also need a new crush washer for the shaft nut. I wouldn't put more than 15-20lbs-ft of torque on those pins before disengaging them.

To add to this if you will do the drop valve method and find true TDC you will be much better off, that stupid engine pin is only good for running valves as it's known for being several degrees off, once you have a true TDC go past it in normal rotation then pull the pump plug out and while using a light and a mirror roll the motor over backwards using the alternator while watching for the pump pin to come into view......much easier.

Do break the pump nut loose before starting this, do install a new lock washer on the pump(there $1.81) other than that it's simple.

Once experienced in this and a TDC mark and pointer are in place you can have the pump on the bench in under 45min.
