Superchips Max Micro Tuner??

Hey everyone... I have been recently looking at chips and have been looking at the Edge and a Predator Stage 1...
A friend of mine who is a mechanic says he thinks I should stay away from boxes that involve taping the wire and go with a Superchips 3705 for my 02 24V 5.9 CTD... He says Superchips wold be safer, more relaible and less intrusive to the engine than the other box types...

the SC will only give me 45hp (I tow heavy alot) but the edge and the Predator are 65 and 75hp respectively...

I was pretty dead set on a Predator stage 1 till he said that - now I am all confused on what to do!

What do you guys think of that... I dont hear much talk on Superchips here and searches on chips dont bring up much on the Superchips... how bought some opinions and/or testimonials please? thanks so much fellas!

I've got the SC and am pleased with it. I use my truck for towing our travel trailer which is @8000 lbs and the SC did very good. Before I put in the injectors I would use the SC (tow safe) to tow with and was pleased with it. It would keep my truck in lockup longer and pull hills much easier while keeping my egt's below 1200 deg. I now run it when I'm not towing because for some reason the trans doesn't like two together. I've heard of people having problems with theirs but in my opinion there will always be a few with problems no matter what you buy. By the way, the 3705 has 3 settings 40hp, 60hp and 70hp (I think those are the right #'s) and have also been told that those are measured at the rear wheels.

very cool... my engine is stock; stock injectors etc... would you recommend if I go with this to just stay in tow safe mode (40hp) all the time?
I am not looking to race or any of that, but want more power for towing and hopefully better gas mileage while not.

thank you for that feedback...
So if I tow say... 8-10k pounds about once or twice a month tops, what setting could I leave it on and be safe? Do you think I could get away with staying on performance tow... or to be extra safe should I stay on the low end... "safe tow" I think they call it?

It all depends on your trans. and the shape it's in. Before I put in the injectors, I did pull a few times on perf. tow just to see what would happen and to be honest, I really couldn't tell the difference except my trans would shudder a little at low rpm (below 1700). I just decided that tow safe was a good level to stay on when she's under a load. If your trans is good, I guess you could actually tow on performance but I don't know why you want to except for bragging rights but then you run the risk of tearing something up.

I have the SC and I run it on performance tow all the time. Though I pull infrequently, I hook to anything from a 2000# wagon to a gooseneck that had 24000# of beans on it...we grossed 36000#...DONT TELL ANYBODY! Anyway, I think it is all in how you drive it...when I had the gooseneck with beans the first thing on my mind was "I have the opportunity to completely gut my truck or I can be conservative for the 25 miles I'm going with the beans." I chose wisely. If I'm pulling anything under 10000# I'm not afraid of a long trip on performance tow. After reprogramming my speedo I can even tell how far and fast I'm going with my big tires!

Thanks farmboy... my trans is stock too but has been well taken care of and never gave me any trouble... so I will assume it is pretty healthy... so it sounds like I might be able to get away witj staying in perf tow all the time and if I really was going to go heavy I could reprogram...

now here's a silly question, but I had been looking at the Edge EZ and the Predator which were 60 and 70 HP units that required tapping the wire...
the SC is only 40 on safe tow... is that still a considerable difference from stock? I am just looking for the most bang for my buck to be honest but want to be safer to my truck than giving it too much ya know?

40 hp is a very noticable difference with just stock injectors, etc. I really couldn't tell a difference between all three settings except my egts were higher on performance and perf. tow so I would just stayed with tow safe, but that's just me. Now with my injectors, it's a different story. I can't slip the torque convertor on tow safe, can slip it a little on per. tow (empty) and can slip it bad on perf. Once I get my trans rebuilt to handle the power, I will probably still run on tow safe and leave it there...maybe.

The EZ doesnt require tapping the wire, and I dont believe that the predator dooes either, but im not for sure, but I am positive the EZ doesnt require a wire tap and in my mind doesnt sacrifice reliability, do you have gauges? if not you could consider the juice w/o tapping the wire, basically makes it an EZ with gauges....just my .02

Got my SC on my 3rd gen - only (ever) on tow mode. Have the 6spd - noticed a difference, and it makes hauling my trailers and loads easier.

Invest in the EGT gauge - you can run up temp real quick without even suspecting. Add some large exhaust and intake and you'll have plenty of power.

If you want to pull sleds, or burn rubber, or race, more is better. This is fine for what I'm doin' - probably for you, too.
