Superchip Max Micro Tuner
Superchip Max Micro Tuner
Just ordered the superchips Tuner truck is stock would like a little more power for now until upgrades on truck are done. stages are #1 40 hp 75 ft/lb torque, 50 hp 90 ft/lb torque, and70hp 140 ft/lb torque. Would I be safe to run with the 50hp 90 ft/lb torque on my stock truck for everyday driving with no towing? Could I run the 70 hp 140 ft/lb torgue mode if I was careful?
The only problem you may have is higher EGT's if you're pushing it hard uphill or towing. I use mine on the highest setting all the time even when towing a 21' cabin cruiser. I did install a K&N cold air system and go to a 4" exhaust from the turbo back to help it breath, and most important, put a pyro gauge in there to keep an eye on those temps.
I have one of those tuners, and I like mine. I have run it in all modes, and have had no mechanical trouble at all. I also use mine for towing a large RV (34', 8500#). I have only used the lowest setting when towing so far as per the instructions.
I have gauges too, and I find the Superchips causes no increase in EGT on the low setting, in fact it runs cooler than stock in tow safe (low). I haven't really compared the other two, but I have put my foot in it on the higher settings, and I have to stay in it a long time to reach 1200*F.
If you're buying one, check ebay. They usually sell for $200-$275 used, and as long as the original owner set his truck back to stock before shipping it to you, you can use the same tuner. they only become "VIN locked" when the program is left in a truck. For example:
- I program my truck to tow safe, then hand programmer to you. The programmer will NOT program your truck.
- I program my truck, run it for a while, then set mine back to stock, then hand you the programmer, you WILL be able to program your truck.
If it is your first "bomb" you will be very happy with the added performance IMO. The Superchips isn't the highest hp adder out there by any means, but it works well for as safe as it is. BTW, my truck is and was still under warranty when I used mine. I even had it into the shop for a lift pump under warranty after installing the Superchip. I just programmed back to stock before taking it in. No issues with warranty at all. I suppose if the dealership wanted to be dicks about it, they could make an issue out of it though.
Just so you know, rear wheel dyno of a truck with Superchips on the low setting (tow safe) adds about 30-40hp and 90-100ft/lbs, which is almost exactly what the Hypertech units adds on it's HIGH setting (stage 3).
