"roots" are positive displacement types, meaning they have a set output per revolution and hence zero lag.
centrifugals are like a belt driven turbo, they "spool" with RPMs.
Although they COULD be made to spin fast enough to match the "roots" type @ idle, they would consume more power to do so.
Oddly, the diesel aftermarket has not really embraced the SC yet, so most of the available SCs are for gasser applications that require relatively low boost levels.
