you can turn it as much as you want to. or untill the startwheel hits the front of the afc housing. It doesnt matter how far ya go.

If you still have the stock plate in the stock position, there wont be much smoke no matter what you do. you will have to either move the plate foreward (all the way) or buy a plate, or grind your own stocker to a #0 or a #100 to get any good out of it.

thanks, I have a #10 plate, but never installed it cuz it looks like I have to take two of the fuel lines off the pump to get access to the break off screw. so I just tried turning up the star wheel.

You don't have to remove the lines. I have had my AFC cover off many times, and never messed with the lines. Remove the bracket that holds them together, and you can spread the lines enough. If you put the plate in you won't regret it. Well worth the effort, and it is a pretty easy job.

A '98 like somis has is harder to take the AFC cover off than previous years as the injector lines are different but can be done without removing the lines. The way I deal with the breakoff bolt on a '98 is with a 12" drill bit, just drill the head off with the bit in-between the lines. Once you remove the other screws and cover the headless screw turns out with just your fingers.

what size drill bit do you use for this? I really want to get the cam plate in. my truck has plenty of power with out weight behind it,but thats maybe 25 days out of the year. the rest of its life I tow 6500 pounds daily so more power is a must

Somis,

i would think a 3/8" drill would work for you...try to use a bit that is about the same size as the screw head, that way it takes the whole thing off, and just counters the screw shaft a bit...

just make sure you don't damage the LINES! or drill through the AFC mounting hole...it's soft aluminum..

good luck...

J

FYI- i took a hacksaw and slotted the screw, then a hammer and screwdriver spun it enough (the screwdriver alone was rounding the hole i slotted) to get the screwdriver in there to turn it...and i live in NEW ENGLAND...

I use a 1/4", it only needs to be the size of the screw shaft plus the 1/4" fits easily in-between the fuel lines.
You will be amazed how fast a sharp bit takes off the screw head, less than 30 seconds. Most break off screws also have a hole in the center that makes for easy centering. Don't lose the two washers under the drilled screw, you can reuse them.

On the star wheel-- Make sure to slide the AFC cover full forward before tightening it down. Sliding the cover is the major adjustment, turning the star wheel is fine tuning.

You have a '97, on a '98 the injector lines are different and pass right over the breakoff screw making it difficult to get at with a chisel without removing the lines.
