So slooooow to build boost

What can I do (no boxes) to fix this? It takes forever to build boost on this sucker in 3rd gear, below 1400 rpm i aint gettin squat, it seems. I'm not trying to fly but it's embarassing how slow it is until the boost builds.

stupid stock truck. i oughta just hit it with a bat.

let it rev to 3200rpm...that should help. plus, 1400rpm is not a safe RPM when running the 5sp without the 5th gear nut fix. there's some sort of harmonic vibration that tends to loosen that nut below ~1700rpm(if my memory serves me correct). this is coming off my memory bank, so lets wait and see what others have to say...

That is just the way a stock 24v is.....there is a lot of off idle defueling built into the factory ECM fueling and timing maps......a box and/or injectors can minimize the effect and the MAD ECM completely eliminates it.

You aren't kidding about the Catcher! Response is instantaneous. The only "lag" you will have is a billowing cloud that goes away in brief moment as the extra fuel is converted to HP.

I have lag in mine, now that I have a 91% TC. I guess I need to upgrade the RV275's to Mach 1.6's.

What would be the single-most effective fix for this? A fueler box?

CTD's gonna say 'edge comp', I can feel it.

go with injectors and BD's RAD to eliminate the defueling off the line...maybe just start with the RAD. 98's injector pumps didnt like wire tapping boxes...just beware. need to check if the RAD is available for 98's...

edit: BD RAD is for 2000 and up according to the search I just did. get a MAD ECM.

Yes, a Comp goes a long way to pick up some bottom end and help with the poor off-idle performance. To my knowledge, the RAD is not available for a 98.5 and is intended as a race-only item. FWIW, my 98.5 is doing just fine with my tapped Comp.....it is safe to say these days that by now, most 98.5's don't have the original VP that gave wire tap boxes a bad name in the first place.

But if you really want to completely eliminate the poor stock off-idle fueling and timing maps and get the largest bottom end power increase available, the only choice is the MAD ECM.

I think you missed the best advise. Don't shift out of second until later. Do what you have to to engage third at a higher RPM. The guys I have ridden with, that have 5 spds., rev second to over 3000 rpm.

No amount of HP will build boost fast at 1400 rpm....although a timing box will help.

rjohnson, i did miss that advise. I will try it.

and I'll look into the Mad ECM - I remember that it's got an expensive core.

thanks, guys.

I have been on here many times but just as a guest and last night was the first I heard about the mad ecm. Looked for about 3 hours and could only find a dyno run with the mad ecm installed on a otherwise stock truck. Where can I order one or should I wait till I get my comp box?
