II SPS6280 will not build more than 35psi boost

What gives? I was without gauges for a while after I blew up the stock turbo and sold my BDTD w/Outlook system. I thought the new turbo felt really laggy and wouldn't light unless you really got into the pedal. My fears were confirmed after installing a Commander system and observed my EGT's going through the roof and top boost was only 35psi. I pinched the wastegate hose as per II's instructions and no change still 35psi. It will go right to 35psi and stay there until I let up on the throttle. Actually I noticed that my Quad race on 2(100hp) it will go to 33 and on 3(140hp) it go to 35. So turbo is somewhat effected by more fuel but it should be at least 46 psi per both Quad tech support and II's tech support. I also removed and reinstalled all the hose clamps on the intake side. They are all very tight now and I don't see any way they could be leaking. Any ideas guys? Thanks, Tom J.

If the quad is using the map sensor too monitor boost, then that could be your problem....sensors generally wont read higher than 39-41 psi, but i have seen some that wont read higher than 35, and some read as much as 46.

The ONLY true way too tell how much boost you are running is by installing a mechanical guage!!

Other than that the other 3 posibilities are:
1. Not enough Fuel to spin it past 35
2. Incorrect hook up of the wiring...not actually boost fooling and the engine defuels too keep you at 35ish
3. Never heard of pinching the hose....the boost elbow has an adjustable allen head screw too adjust the wastegate, screw in too raise boost, screw out too lower it.

I am resolved to the fact that a manual boost guage is in my future. I just don't have the coin right now. Even if I were to buy and install a boost gauge and find out that I was making more boost than the digital gauge says, I still am not happy at all with the extreme lag and high EGT's I am getting.

trust me.....lag goes away with more fuel. Egt's shouldnt be high either, when i was running mine @40 psi with the smarty i couldnt see higher than 1100*F @ wot. And the smarty has more fuel than the quad does!!

there was a small batch of commanders shipped that couldn't read more than 32-35psi...that may also be your issue. i had to send mine back for repair and now I see upto low 40's if I am hard on the peddle. Quad should be able to check the serial number on your commander and tell if thats the case.

A manual gauge may still be your best bet long term though

Well I finally got my Smarty today. I took off the Quad race and installed the new 4.4 software on level 9. Truck just belched smoke and I could hardly keep from getting hit when I pulled into traffic because truck would not get up and go. The turbo would just not light. I tried 7,5, and then 3 and truck got better but would still cover the entire road with smoke. I then downloaded the aftermarket injector program with mild torque management and it seemed to run OK on level 5 but the initial smoke was still bad.

I do not believe that my problems have anything to do with the Smarty. I am sure that my new SPS 6280 is having problems or there is one heck of a leak that I can't find.

take off the intake boots, check the endplay both axially and radially, up and down, then in and out.
see if it spins freely by hand.
did you prime the turbo with fresh oil when installing it prior to starting the engine?

This sounds mechanical to me, I agree, I dont think it is the smarty or any other electronics. Do you hear any "air noise" when you stand on it? Like maybe the turbo isnt bolted flush to the manifold, or a popped IC, or a busted/loose boot?

That sounds very similar to my new turbo. Driving around on #9 with an egg under my foot and there's still a constant haze at any speeds below 70mph. Taking off from a red light as easy as possible and it still rolls the coal.

Did you get the resistor that you need to plug into the stock electronic wastegate harness? If not then that's your problem. Your truck will not work until you do that. They are about $25-30 and are available through II or HTT. Good luck.

I do have the resistor.

One of the problems that was pointed out to me by the diesel shop is the transmission. It is keeping me well below the optimum rpms to light the turbo. I am driving around at 1200rpm and when I give it gas it dumps smoke until about 2000 rpms.
