Sounds like he did not take his truck back to stock, with the Smarty, before trying it on yours??
Think this is required....even to just check codes.

Thanks Rowj
Hopefully that is the problem , I know he didn't take his truck back to stock we didn't think you had to to check just for codes .

I don't think that you need to return to stock to check codes. I think you have a issue with your obdII port, possibly try putting some dielectric grease on the plug.

Smarty will start and let you check codes even if it's locked to his VIN.

Looks like it doesn't get juice. Look at the plug and check your fuses.

I agree with alpine, I've used my Smarty a number of times on other trucks to get codes without downloading it. haven't tried a 3rd gen however.

If it was a fuse would that affect anything else ? cause I have no other problems with my truck.

I don't have the wiring diagrams for an 01... sorry. But it would not necessarily mess up something else. The OBD standard requires to supply 12V on Pin16 and ground on pin5
(Looking at the connector the upper row is 1-8 and the lower row is 9-16 from left to right)

See http://www.auterraweb.com/obdiipinout.html

So could I plug a test light into pin 16 to see if it has 12v ?

I'd use a multimeter. (I don't know the amps that they need to supply.. and I don't know your test light)

smarty

Well I found that pin #16 was pushed out thru the back of the connector. So I checked it with a multimeter and I got 12.3 v so I think that was the problem . But now after fixing the pin back into the connector I lost current to pin #16 ,my radio , cigarette lighter and interior lights don't work .I checked all fuses and they were all ok . Any ideas guys I am pulling my hair out on this one .

OK, you blew a fuse while reinstalling the pin. I think this should be a fuse in the PDC under the hood. (But I could be wrong)

Look into the owners manual, there should be a fuse plan that shows you where the mirrors etc are connected.

AlpineRAM you where right it was a fuse it was the (IOD) fuse the one with that little plastic housing around it making it hard to get to on the left side of the dash .I was checking it with one of those fuse checker tools that lights up but it showed that the fuse was good .So after searching on the net last night I ran across some info at geno's garage web sight so I pulled the fuse and sure enough it was bad .New fuse and all is ok so thanks AlpineRAM and every one else for their help .
