Silencer ring

What years came with the "silencer ring" ? What is it and where is it located ? I have a 98 12 valve and was wondering if mine came with one. Thanks.

not sure what years...I think 98.5 2002 24valve but dont know about 12v - it was added by Dodge to the Holset that goes on our RAM only to reduce the whistle when boost build up.
many of us have removed it and you can notice a nice whistle from the turbo!not too much..I personally love it!!!!

its the steel ring that you see in the photo...check if your has it

My 98 12valve had one in. Only seconds to remove and certainly whistle sounds better.

There's a spring clip in front of it, either a screwdriver or needle-nose pliers will get it out, the clip will pop out and the silencer ring will pretty much fall out.

The 12v's have them too. My 98 had one, and the WH1C from my 94 engine has one as well.

The removal makes a different turbo whistle (many like it more)
does it have any other effect on performance?

I say you lose 5 hp with the silencer ring removed. One of the reasons I chose a 3rd gen turbo for my upgrade was that it comes with a silencer ring to quiet down the turbo on long towing trips.

Possible, but the weight saved might negate any loss of hp.
