should i chip my truck?
i have an 02 dodge cummins and it have 298000 miles on it. all of my friends want me to chip it, but my relatives say ill blow the engine up since it has all the miles on it. what do you guys think?
I gotta agree with the other guys. Gauges, pyrometer, fuel pressure, boost, tranny temp, and fuel system before anything else. Better get a fass or airdog on there asap before you kill your injection pump. It was a lesson I learned the hard way.
I would get a fuel system first, then worry about planting the power. You will need either a good clutch or a built auto to handle the power. Then you can start adding power. If you choose a module like ADR/Pulse, you will have your gauges.

Chips are for Fords. Our Dodges use fuel/timing boxes that plug into the MAP and data link harnesses, and some tap the pump wire.
If adding nothing more than a box, then you generally don't need to worry about the transmission. If the box taps the pump wire then it can add 100+ hp and is a different story. Otherwise you're only talking about 30 or so hp, and that's nothing to worry about with regard to the tranny.
For what you're talking about though, you definitely need to put some money into the transmission. At the minimum, a better torque converter and valve body will do quite a bit. For serious power, a full rebuild with parts from someone like DTT, ATS or Goerend is the only way to do it.
Here's what I'd go with, and in this order:
Gauges (fuel pressure, boost, EGT)
Lift pump replacement (FASS or Airdog)
Intake and exhaust
Fuel/timing box (old school would be an Edge Comp, a Smarty programmer would be good though)
Formula 1 Mach series injectors (I have Mach 1s and make a solid 375 hp with my Comp)
Transmission work
Turbo
Cam

Gauges
FASS 150
Stock exhaust w/ muffler replaced with straight pipe
Edge Comp (pump wire tapped)
Mach 1 injectors
Southbend Con FE clutch
PDR hybrid HX-35/40 turbo
My setup gives extremely streetable power and awesome fuel mileage, great exhaust temps when towing, and at the same time attracts seriously hot women. Okay, that last part may only be in my mind.
In the end it all boils down to how much money you want to spend.
