Which Shock Absorbers???
Which Shock Absorbers???
I have a stock 99, 2wd cummins. 99 percent of my driving is highway. One percent is back roads, sometimes 4 wd backroads (which I usually manage to negotiate, sometimes with the aid of my come-a-long and a long cable) to access rock climbing destinations but don't want this off road time to dictate my shock selection. I probably drive 50 percent of the time empty and the other 50 percent is carrying my 2000 lb camper. I have 140,000 miles on the rig and noticed the last time I was on a trip with the camper that there was unusual sway when cornerning at highway speed. This sway had not been evident until the last trip. I have never changed the shocks so they are original. I did add Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs to the rear leaves a few years ago because when I put the camper on, the truck rested on the overload leaf. I went to my local after market truck supplier, Ultra Truck, and the owner (who I have gained confidence in over the years as being knowledgeable) suggested the place to start to correct the sway problem is to replace the shocks. He suggested Rancho RS5000. What do others on this forum suggest? Thanks

5000's are a waste of money. They ride harsh and they don't last very long.
Best bang for the buck is the Bilstein 5100, lots of guys on here are running them and are very happy with the ride. Set will cost you less than $300...

I did my research about 2 years ago...due to some real weird tire wear. Money was not a problem...I just wanted the best product. I looked at Rancho's...but was sold on Edelbrock. They have the right valving, and piston size. No complaints...handles like I added larger sway bars. Good luck...all are competitive, but real happy with my Edelbrocks. Bought them from Summit.
Cowhand: I checked Bilstein 5100 on Summit Racing and it looks like they may be only for 4wd and lifted rigs. Mine is stock lift and 2wd. Looks like I should get BSN B46-1908 rear and 1907 front according to Summit. Can you suggest a better source for them and is this the correct number??

Rancho RS9000's work very nice - adjust for a nice ride, crank up for hauling the camper under control. BTW - that's what overloads are for, if you put airbags on and keep the springs off the overloads, you get more swaying side to side

Rancho 9000 are the only shock to consider if you run 1/2 empty and 1/2 full load. The adjustability yields comfort and control at the extremes. Works for me. Four years now and no sign of wearing out.
I get sway with my camper which I consider normal because it's pretty high. Considering a rear sway bar.
