S300:S400 twins
spool up on mine is fine now just drivin around, but i dont wanna be too laggy especially towin 24000 lbs worth of rock crawlers to moab. how much spool up decrease? 100 rpm? 200 rpm?
glad to hear everytime I try to buy something I get lead astray by venders. Any ideas on how much aditional heat ddp4's will add? or should I just put them in and if I blow up the engine buy an excursion.
I know what you are saying Captain I feel like my combo is way to hot for me to really enjoy! I really don't like driving by my pyro, unless I have a boost leak which I don't this turbo does not cool like they say it does! So what twin set gives you the bottem end like the stocker and the top end charge that I'm looking for??
The old reliable 3b with a 22 cm housing ain't bad for a bottom turbo. When I was making 10 lbs. of boost at the engine the 3b was making 3 lbs. I used to gross from 20,000 up to 34,000 on the 12 valve and it handled it pretty decent. I had a b1-b2 setup on one of my 24 valve trucks and it just wasn't the right setup with a tight convertor for trailer pulling.
Ok guy's went out today and tinkered with the old P-pump and the results were decent! I started by moving the plate back and and lossening up the star wheel and that combonation stopped the early dump of fuel and helped me get a handle on my egt's which in turn helped in my overall spool up. Guy's I think with some adjustments this turbo might be a good single after all on a 12 valve..........
So with the setup I have below except I'm runing stock 215's not the ddp4's. I cruise at 2500rpm/75mph at like 700 degrees. But if I floor it the pyro will eventually peg at 1500degrees so Id ont know how hot its really running. Thats with whats suposed to be a large turbo and stock injectors and like 52psi. I hate to think what ddp4's would do to the temps.
Mine cruises at around 625 at 70mph(3.55's), will hit 1200 at about 100-105, peaks at about 1400 but it takes a bit to go from 1200 to 1400. If I back it down to 500 hp and put the K31 on it cruises at about 600 deg at 70mph, will hit about 1150 at 100mph and peaks at about 1250. At the 500 hp level up in the hills in 6th gear the k31 will start doing it's thing by the time the temps get to about 700. On a fairly steep grade in 6th (empty) slowing to 50mph and then adding the pedal the temps will rise to 700 and you will start hearing the primary boost come up. By the time it reaches 800 degs I am running 70 mph and the egt's will usually start dropping down to around 750. accellerating up to 85 or so will take them up to 900-950, and then backing off to maintain the speed( 80mph) it will drop back to 850 or so.
Sounds like some egt's I can live with Ron! Ron how do you think the K31 will work with my turbo?? I'm looking at that turbo or just an Ht3b. I am definitely going twins but before I do I will have to do the studs. Hmm maybe thats why I continue to run 50 lbs of boost. I guess I might be looking for an excuse to do the stud's LOL ??
which set up spools faster for you ron? do you tow with both setups? does the k31 and the 400 have the same mounting and tubing or do you have to change everthing out when you swap them?
I did not have good luck with the 13ss housing, but if it works well for you as a single, it should be fine. The k31 spools quicker than the 3b/22 and will easily handle 500hp. The K31 is longer than an S400 but they will both bolt into the same twin setup under the following conditions. The k31exhaust housing is longer from the center divider of the t6 flange to the end of the 5" outlet by about 1.25 inches or so. I built my setup around the k31 so with it in place my down pipe is near the firewall(normal). When I swap to an s400, the downpipe and exhaust system come forward(away from firewall) about 1.25". The rest of the plumbing fits fine. Same cold pipe, turbo support, inlet tubing etc. This setup is handy because it allows the use of the K31, All the S400 variations that use a t6 flange, 5" v-band outlet and v-band compressor outlet. The Garrett gt42's will fit also. The gt45 may fit also. The k31 spools quicker and makes a better tow/daily driver setup than the full sized s400 on my truck. I am running a smaller version (not B2) right now. 1.1 exhaust housing 75mm compressor, 87mm turbine. The K31 spools faster and tows better than this charger also.(+ it's about 1/2 the cost).
A k31 runs around $925. A B2(s400 w/75mm comp,96mm turbine, 1.32 ex hous) runs around $650. An S400 w/ 75mm comp, 87mm turbine, 1.1 ex housing, runs around $1700. My 1/2 the price comment was referring to the Smaller turbine and housing S400 vrs the K31.
