roll mat bed unloaders

What is your opinion on the accessories that claim to be able to crank out up to 1 ton of material from your bed with a simple crank handle with a mat that rolls up on your tailgate. Do they really work? and what brands are they. It would be nice if I could find one that would handle up to 1.5 tons and was electric.

I used to use on of these quite often. I don't know about the capacity, the weak point is the handle itself from what I could tell.

I could get a scoop of rocks or mulch off in a hurry. I think the brand name I was using was "Load Handler". Put it this way, if you get too much on there, now worries, just go up to the front and start shoveling some out. After a while you'll get it moving. Sure beats trying to unload the whole bed by hand.

Now a days I borrow my brother in law's dump trailer.

I used one for around 10-12 years on a truck box trailer, it worked great for 1 cu yd of rock or black dirt but if you got a yard of wet sand it was really tough to move. I found that if you throw a handful of dry sand down on the bed before you unroll the fiber glass out it really helped. Over the years mine managed to get some holes in it but it still works like new. My wife bought it for me one Christmas and if I remember correctly they were available in two weight ratings, I just have the smallest but it been OK for me as I only haul 1 yard at a time.

the weak point is the tailgate, seen plenty of trucks that unload lots of stuff with them, and you can always tell the ones that had a little too much on there, two nice dents, one on each end of the gate but they will get your truck unloaded.

Eww, yes, and I forgot to mention that if you don't use rags in between the paint and the rubber on the bracket you will sand the paint right off your tailgate.
