talked w/ a guy on TDR who did this a while back... no problems sucking oil... he used no valves or anything, so neither did I...

he put a vac gauge on the crankcase... said just cruising down the road, the needle would be just on the vac side of 0, so there's no pressurizing the case... said at full boogie at 60psi of manifold pressure, he was seeing .1 psi vac.

install the tube at a 45 and 45 the end of the tube so that the exhaust gas blows past it correctly, and there shouldn't be ANY pressurizing of the crank case, ONLY vacuum.

as for sucking out the oil? think about it... how could it "suck oil"? all it's seeing is crank case vapors... if there's oil mist in those vapors, then yeah, you're gonna lose some oil, but not much... I don't see how it could be any worse than how much oil I was sucking out at 80mph... but now it's going out the tailpipe instead of all over the underside and backside of my truck!!!!

now, if you were to put a couple breathers on the valve covers, then yeah, you'd probably start losing quite a bit of oil!!!

Who is going to be the first to try one of these?
The Condensator
Definitly would eliminate any blowby mess.

I know for a fact they work excellent for gassers and their website shows diesel instalation.

Hey Forrest do you have to have vehicle inspections where you live? I wonder if that system would keep a truck from passing an inspection? Would there be any excess smog particles comming out the tail pipe?

I've extended the hose on my truck, but I'm getting tired of the oil drips on my clean painted shop floor.

I've been thinking about the invirogaurd kit from Fleetgaurd.

no smog on diesels in TX... if it ever came to that, I'd just cap off the tube and run the draft tube open for the inspection if it caused a problem... I believe the only tailpipe inspection that's done on diesels is an opacity test... and the blowby vapors are hardly visible unless it's night time and you've got direct light on them.

Justin,

I think Dee is running the Mr Gasket kit but uses a couple of small K&N style air filters on a couple of his valve covers for the intake of evacuated air.

The first time I ever saw this system was on Opie's truck at 2001 May Madness. He welded the one way valve on his down pipe right on the downward bend comming out of the turbo.

John Harvey welded his valve at 45*on the down tube just before it goes into the rest of the exhaust system. John's never did give him a negative crankcase pressure, but it still works getting rid of the blowby. John reports there is still air trying to come out the oil fill cap.

That Condensator thing looks interesting, but how much is it?

DRAG racers have been doing this for over 20 years.
We used the anti "backfire" valves to keep from lifting the valve covers.

There is no reason this should cause a 5.9 to use additional oil.

IMHO

Just a thought - if you're running a muffler or cat, or anything else that *might* generate backpressure, maybe the 1-way valve should be installed... Forrest's exhaust probably creates a vacuum just from moving through the air and creating a vacuum at the tip from the displaced air around that sewer pipe..

I'm certainly gonna try this when I get a 4" system... it might get my drip sources down to the single digits!

Fist off, great post Forest!!!

So, is the condensater that Infidel is talking about actualy a water seperator that puts the blowby back into the pre turbo air intake tube?? Don't gasers already do this?? What do you guys think??

cool thread

Plumbing that blow-by pre turbo would be asking for big trouble in a turbo charged engine.
Great post Forrest
I always ran them into the header colecters on my race engines but I always had a one way valve in line, interesting to find out it works without the valve

The Condensator removes water and gunky contaminated oil but lets the unburned fuel that passes by the rings in any engine back in the air intake to be reburned. What makes the most sense to me with this device is you aren't putting the nasty stuff back in your engine.

Friend of mine installed one last week on his '02 gasser van and went on a 1200 mile trip, he gained 2 mpgs and collected about half a cup of some of ugliest, foulest smelling gunk, stuff that any sane person would never consider purposely adding to their engine. This is with a tight engine, one that is more worn would have even better results.

well crud... was driving around w/ my buddy today getting on it and stuff... truck seemed to be blowing light smoke out the exhaust at full boogie... got a little worried, but the truck felt good and all the needles were pointing the right way...

when we got out, we saw that the dipstick tube had pushed out and puked... too much pressure in the crankcase. didn't blow the tappet cover seal thank goodness!

I think the excess smoke was because with the dipstick out, the evac tube was able to draw fresh air into the crank case via the dipstick.

and...

now that I've put 400 miles or so on it, oil has collected in the exhaust pipe and is weeping past my band clamps

so... NOT the best modification I've made yet

back to the drawing board (till I have time/money to re-ring the motor)

I thought maybe the hose collapsed under sustained WOT and the blowby pressurized the case, but the hose is good and strong and it would take a LOT of vac to collapse it!!!!
