Pyro Probe idea/question

Well here it is. I have the Isspro EV pyro, with a 1/4 inch probe. I have been wanting to try a 1/8 inch probe (they do make them, right?) for a little while. My reasoning on this is that it seem to me that it should respond quicker, at least to some extent, due to the smaller mass. Am I correct in this? And I would just bush down my existing tapped hole to fit the smaller probe. I don't see why that would pose any sort of an issue... And what about obtaining the new probe, would it have to be Isspro, (I'm guessing no) and where would I get just the probe?

Any thoughts or comments? This is just an idea I came up with to see if it would change the way the pyro reacts. Mainly a curiosity thing.

Nick

the pyro i got was an adjustable and i do think it was a 1/8 NPT as well, same die was used on banjo bolt and pyro if i recall correctly. My old pyro was dated 1997 on a banks Isspro gauge, and had a post turbo 1/4 inch probe. They respond the same, well actually the Isspro is quicker, but i think its due to more modern technology.. The probe seems to be the same thing, its just a little thinner...

I personally dont think there would be much of a difference in response. If you were familair with the construction of a thermocouple youd see that the business end of a T/C is simply two wires twisted together and bonded. The T/C wires themselves will be the same size so the only thing that will be different is the outer casing covering the wires. Whether the 1/4" probe casing is thicker than the 1/8' probe casing - I doubt that very much.

As for other brands of thermocouples - unless you have the means to accurately test the pyrometer to veryify proper functioning I would stick with the Isspro thermocouple. I suspect the Isspro pyrometer responds quicker due to the amplification box.

My 2 cents

Correct - it is the difference in metal alloys that generates the voltage, not the diameter of the conductors.

The diameter of the casing and the thermally conductive material may cause some small delay, but no mechanical meter will respond quickly enough for any one to observe the difference.

Even the Digital meters are limited in response by the inherent sample time for the a\d conversion.

A computer and an optical probe would be required to note any damaging spiking.

So, not to worry - the probe location is more important than response time, for the available automotive gages.
