propane and a plate ok?
propane and a plate ok?
Hey, Im new to the site, and think its great. With that said, I was wondering if I could run a ps 2000 propane kit and a fuel plate?I havent bought either of them yet. My friend has the propane but is looking to sell it. I want to buy it , but I also want to get a fuel plate. Will these two work together? thanx
You have to get at least an EGT gauge first cause they are going to go through the roof. Propane is pretty much looked down on here. We like to make our power without propane or nitrous. Also, your probably gonna have to do tranny work (new clutch or new torque converter and valve body) because the added power of the plate and propane is probably gonna be to much for stock. What kind of plate are you looking at getting?
If your gonna be running both...then you will need more air because fuel plate adds more fuel and propane is a fuel so you will double the fuel and no extra air....which like Blue said the EGTs will go POOOFFFF and so will many other things cause of heat. What I would do is either run...Stock fuel plate with propane and a bigger turbo or big plate with no propane and bigger turbo. But i second what blue said about the tranny you WILL NEED TO UPGRADE IT!
If you decide to run propane, don't advance the timing. Propane lights before the diesel and causes a big pressure spike, more timing makes this worse and will blow the head gasket or crack a piston. Propane is OK on a stock truck but it's playing with a rattlesnake on a truck with a lot of fuel or advanced timing. Water/meth is much safer, you just have to watch how much methanol you run and how early you turn it on.
BTW, not everybody is a diesel only snob around here. Power is what matters to me, not how you make it. I think it would be fun to take a stock truck and put nitrous, propane, and water/meth on it and see how much HP it would make before it blew.

Propane is VERY cold, if you use it moderately it shouldn't send the egt's through the roof, many people use propane for towing and have no problems because less throttle to maintain speed = less fuel from injection pump, and the propane helps burn more of the diesel so, again less throttle to maintain speed. But if you put a #10 full forward and run propane and drive it like you stole it somethin' bad might could happen
Hmmmmmm, sounds like fun, maybe I'll have to give it a try after I get my turbo put on. Where does it all end

Thanks for the info. I've got all the nessessary gauges and I just put a new clutch in it about 50 miles ago, I know I have to break it in first, and when it is I want more power. I got the clutch from South Bend and they say it handles 450hp and 1000ft-lbs, so i should be ok. How much power can i get out of a plate if i open up the the air intake?

A #10 fuel plate is agressive by itself. A milder plate and propane would work just fine. The propane would give you an additional 60-80 hp and a mpg or two to boot. Propane is not intended to be used like nitrous and should not be used as a max power adder. A little is good, more is not better.
In a variable system, EGT's are actually reduced, not a great deal but by about 50-100 degrees, because, while you are technically adding a fuel, you are not adding very much (this is the key!!) and you are burning it and more of the diesel along with it. You are also ,as previously posted making the same amount of power earlier, so less full throttle runs, especially when towing helps to contribute to reduced temperatures.
Many trucks run propane safely. How many have you "actually" ever heard of in reality and not just internet stories that have had catastrophic engine failures related directly and specifically to propane injection?

I had a 96 with a plate. I ran a temp propane setup and didnt notice a big change in power. I did gain around 5 lbs of boost though.
I would stick to just a plate.
A word of advise, get an EGT gauge. VERY VERY important. I ran temps a lot.
Good luck!
