Well I'm just saying what I've been told by a tranny builder.......so I could very possibly be wrong but what's the point of risking it?? I sure wouldn't want too but that's just me!

Either way he's gonna eventually need a tranny......so do a VB and see how long it lasts.....if it gets you by for awhile than great!!!

I see your point on the chance of it. I would not put a high line pressure VB in an old unit either.

Why not? I did. Well, high miles being 80k or so but they were rough. Lots of power braking and burnouts and drag racing. Mine wasn't slipping though. If yours is already slipping then it's toast. Once an auto starts to slip it's pretty much all downhill from there. Adding more pressure is just a bandaid.

Ok, you've convinced me not to get the VB yet. Hopefully I will have funds to do the whole thing in about 6-8 months and no more towing than I do, it should last. I don't do any drag racing or brake stands so I really do baby it other than towing.

I was asking Dave Goerend about possibly blowing out seals with an aftermarket VB in an older tranny. He said if it does do any damage, then it was gonna happen soon anyway, because they run something like 250psi in reverse stock, and only 180psi or so in drive with a built VB. I think a VB only would be fine for your tranny.

go online research a place to purchase the transmission book on the 47re. Then sit down and read a little about it and understand it enough to feel comfortable about taking them apart. Now the 47re or 518 is so simple to rebuild and work on. I can rip mine out of the truck and completely rebuild it for just over 100.00 bucks. thats with purchasing a rebuild kit from known friend who owns tranny shop locally and he still makes profit buying the kit from him. SO basicly what im saying is do the research and stop fearing the auto tranny. They are very tough critters if you build them right. The book i have has an elaminated foldout of step by step on how to tear down the tranny. Then it also has a section of known flaws about the tranny and how to upgrade or fix them. I went thru and rebuilt the tranny and replaced all the known flaws with upgrades and my tranny takes a beating and still asks for more.
