Any tricks to installing pistons without a ring compressor?? Ive never done this befotre so maybe some can help me out. What are some other alternatives to compressing the rings so the piston will fit down into the cylinder??

Thanks,
Chad

I think the ring compressers are less than $10. If you had something to clamp the rings you might be able to, but would take two people and have a higher risk of breaking a ring. If you need rings I have 1 top ring and 1 bottom one. Just in case.

why not just get a ring compresser? if you burr a ring you will need it next month Or just bust out your die grinder and cut a nice funnel in the top of the cyl then you will never need a ring comp again

Thanks guys, I guess I didnt realize a ring compressor was so cheap. After splurging for the pump timing kit I was scared to check on prices for more tools I will only use once. Its nice to know they can be had for a reasonable price. Do places like NAPA or Autozone have them?? Hopefully I dont need a special one from Cummins??

Any special instructions for the piston install so I dont dik things up. I got the cummins manual but I thought a little advice cant hurt. This will be the first motor build for me so hopefully everything goes well.

Thanks,
Chad

A large hose clamp will work in a pinch, but thats very backyardish. But ya gott do what ya gotta do. The adjustable ones by lyle work pretty good. Kevin

Yes the crank is out and has been polished. New rings, bearings, pistons, oringed head, studs, bigger injectors and bigger turbo(s). I bought a ring compressor at NAPA for $15. Then I went to see a buddy of mine to just shoot the sheet. Anyways, he has one I can borrow. It looks like a big oil filter wrench and the sleeve or band is ruffled and has slots in the ruffles. I hadnt seen one like this before but the idea behind it made sense. The ruffled sleeve made for less contact on the ring/piston which makes installation easier and the slotts made oil/lube much easier. Looks like I am all set.

Thanks for all the help,
Chad

I used a splitting mull to put mine in. On the top of the piston it will say "FRONT" so you know which way to put em in.
