oil pressure build up
oil pressure build up
My oil pressure builds very slow when cold, maybe longer than 15 seconds. If I would take the filter off after the engine sit for 8 hours. filter would be half full.
I bought a 3 quart accumulor for it to make a prelube system. I pumbed it in on the fitting by the turbo oil line. This made it worse. Alot worse. The only thing I chould figure out is that the air in the system was being pushed back into the oil pump. So I drilled and tapped a hole on the on filtered side of the filter housing. This helped that out, but still worse than it was orginally . If I restricked the amout of oil being injected it was accepable leve, but didn't help out the orignal problem. So I took the hole thing off today.
Why Isn't there a check vavle to keep the oil from back bleeding?
The Accumulator step up work great when engine was warm. I have up to 40 psi before I started it up. Cool!!

Many years ago there was a great article in the TDR about oil pressure at start up when cold. They tested a few different brands, some synthetic and some mineral oil. I don't recall the results specifically, but the important thing that I took from the article was that the oil just isn't slick enough at cold temperatures to get up near the pressure sensor immediately. Also, consider the age of your oil pressure sensor. I have another unit(not a Dodge) that has the same engine and oil pressure at start up is the same. Maybe Amsoil or Lucas can help although I don't have any personal experience.
I've got 166K on the Dodge engine and 25K on the other and I have never received a bad oil analysis. If there is any damage being caused by low oil pressure at start up it will reveal itself in the oil. I wouldn't worry if I were you.
