Off Brand Torque Converters

Anybody have any experience with off brand torque converters? There is one on ebay advertised as four clutch, upgraded everything, unlimited torque for $899/three clutch 1000 lb/ft $599 and another 650 lb/ft for $299. All have 14 month or 14k warranty. I know that going with one of the tried and true manufacturers is recomended but want to know if anyone has taken a leap of faith on a hard part like this and had some success. Thanks.

I would be hard pressed to go outside of the known good products.

As an example, gasser torque converters. I have a Pontiac with a 455. It produces more torque than the average Chevy. Several of the big name builders I tried, the engine walked through the stall ratings. Even the custom unit I tried.

Ended up with a unit from an outfit that builds just for Pontiacs. More money, but it was right the first time.

My point is, do you want to be the one to take a chance and possibly throw that money away? I would spend the extra bucks to get the right one the first time.

I wouldn't get the four clutch. If I were doing the install myself, I might give the $599 or $299 one a shot. I don't really believe in anything over 3 clutches anyway. Anything more is just for marketing. Are they billet?

Hey Dave just curious what brand was the converter on the Poncho? I have a 69 Bird with a 462 and a stick (Muncie M-21) that I am considering bringing to the strip for a little fun but I fear that the 540 Ft lbs will wreck some things along the way so i think I am going to put an auto in so that the strip will be more fun and I can be more consistent on a regular basis. Thanks Ralph

Continental Converters.

They are the makers of he "Jim Hand Special" It's a tight 3500 stall.

I went with a much lower stall due to gearing and the light 'bird platform.
