Share your experience with your off-brand aftermarket torque converter.
Okay. Im kind of in need of a TC for my truck, and i was wondering about some off the off brand converters some of you guys had. Ive heard of TCI, dayco, mojave green, and a few other brands. Please tell what brand you have, if you like it or not, and why, and where you got it, and how much you paid for it(if you dont mind). Im only 16(be 17 Nov.11th), and i cant afford to drop $1300 for a big nice ats or dtt triple disc converter, and i dont plan on getting much over 300 rear wheel hp, if that, so i was wondering this stuff. I have seen the TCI converters on jegs i think for about $450, and someone said they had one, and really liked it, and i was wondering if anyone else has had an experience with these. I would probably buy one if i could get a few good responses. Also, if you can, tell your estimated/dyo proven rear wheel hp, and tell if your TC slips any or not. Thanks a lot.

I dunno if Dunrite is considered "off brand" but I've had their single disc TC in with their rebuild for about 10k with no problems. Worlds better than the 165k stock tranny.
I got it because I just wanted a reliable rebuild better than stock without any drag racing or pulling.
I got mine through Rip & Rob at http://www.sourceautomotive.biz
I dont remember what just the TC cost because I did a rebuild at the same time, but I remember it being more than $700 not sure.
I think my truck is somewhere between 280-300hp, soon to be more with the addition of 181DV's, as it sits now and it holds tight no slipping and runs cool.

I can't tell you just about the converter since I have a complete Goerend tranny. Now it is just about impossible for me to have the converter shudder. Try going to www.gbtransmissions.com and you can e-mail Dave. He is very knowlegeable and will give you staight info.

If you have a very reputable transmission shop nearby that builds units for the high powered off road crowd, and that that will talk to you, go over the issue of torque converters with them. There are a number of small shops that build fully furnace brazed bodies, machined impellers, and have the larger diameter clutches with high quality frictions, but you have to hunt for them.
There are some very big names, that are very popular, that are not worth the money either!
Read the technical article on torque converters on the DTT website, it will be helpful in getting you up to speed on the issue. www.dieseltrans.com DTT is down on multiple disk converter lock-up clutches, but if installed properly in a transmission that has sufficient line and clutch feed pressure, they do a very good job. It is important you that the time to talk to the converter vendor and let them know what you have done with your valve body, and any modifications to your line pressure before you choose the converter. If you get a duh? Go elsewhere, as all you are talking to is a parts changer.
With the miles you have on your truck, I would recommend you strongly consider a complete package of transmission and converter from either DTT or Goerend Brothers at one time. It will save you a lot of money in the long run, and there will be someone there to answer the setup questions.

I ran a "Pro-Torque" Converter for almost three years
with no problems at all! They are not designed to take
the H.P. and torque like an ATS TripleLok, DTT or Suncoast,
but are not priced like them either. I believe they run
about $600.00 now. You can call Scheid Diesel for more
information if you are interested or contact "Pro-Torque"
direct. Scheid Diesel's number is: 1-800-669-1593. Ask
to speak with "J.P" and he should be able to help you.
Good luck.

Well, my tranny actually only has about 100k on it. Im not going to buy a big high dollar tranny, because i dont have the money, and if i did, i wouldnt have money for any more bombs. I think a decent cheaper aftermarket torque converter will do me fine for a long time. A guy i know good, says he can get me one in a couple to 3 weeks for a good deal i think, but i havent personally talked to him about it yet. Another boy that knows him said he needed to talk to me about it, so maybe i can get a decent one fairly cheap. He personally has a Dayco(if thats the right spelling) in his truck, and really likes it. I havent rode in it yet, but hopefully i can this weekend, and ill see what i think about it. I know you guys are trying to help, but i cant afford a full blown tranny, and i would just like peoples experiences with their cheaper, not so name brand torque converters.
dalee: You mean if you mash it in drive with no load, it will only turn 1300 rpm's? How does it pull compared to with the stock converter.
Thanks for all the help guys

GB quoted me $550. for a single disk. I think this is a very respectable price and he said he would back it for 50000 miles !! He did strongly recommend a shift kit, but said that with this set-up the tranny should be good up to 400HP.

Yes, that is definatley a pretty good price it sounds to me like. I think ive ran across a deal on a dayco(is that how its spelled?) torque converter with about 3-4 thousand miles on it. It has a billet steel cover, and the boy that has it really likes it, but ATS is sending him a new one to try, so hes taking it out. The price of this converter new is about $700, and i think i can get it from him for about $350 hopefully, so if i can, it should be mine in a few weeks when he gets it out of his truck. He took me for a ride in it last night, and it felt good to me. No shuddering or anything, and it pulled good. One reason for the low miles was that he kept having turbo troubles, and then his motor dropped a valve because somehow it got the wrong cam in it, and so it has sat some. He said he had about 350hp on it with no problems, so hopefully i can get it, and I guess if i do, ill install it sometime on christmas break maybe; then a little later on injectors will hopefully come
. Leaving the TC out of the question, with my transgo shift kit, how much hp do you guys think my tranny will hold, considering the torque converter will hold? I dont plan on much, if any over 300hp, but im just curious. Thanks

I've been running a Pro-Torque extreme for about 3 1/2 years now. Holds about 400 hp without complaints. Burn outs, hard driving, etc... Had a shift kit installed at the same time - I've got plenty of compliants with that though....
I got a Roadrunner T/C & BD valve body installed in my 133K auto. The Torque Convertor I found on ebay new for 395.00, company called Roadrunner. My stall speed dropped 300 to 400 rpm. Just go to ebay and do a search under Dodge Diesel and you'll find them. Then I also put in a BD value body, cost was 355.00 I think. Very nice combo, I 'll replace them with a DTT tranny and T/C when and if I go over 350HP.

These are the kind of replies i was looking for. I cant wait to get my TC if the deal goes through good, and i get it in with no problems. For those of you that pull loads much, did it make much difference in pulling? I pull tractors, and hay, and stuf int he summer, and that would be hard on my stock converter, so thats one reason i really want a new one. Also, those of you that run at the strip any; did it make any difference in your times? Thanks a lot guys.
