NV5600 pros/cons???

hey fellas i have an opportunity to buy a nv5600, (i really want a manual tranny) so my questions are this..... can they handle my current hp and tq?(with an upgraded clutch of course) are they reliable? and does anyone on here have a built truck with the 6 speed that could give some more insite on this tranny, most guys prefer the nv4500, but im just curious if the nv5600 is just as good??? thanks

NV5600 is supposedly a stronger tranny. Downside is they're not making them anymore and parts will become hard to find.

There have been numourous discusions about avalability of parts. It seems like parts are more available then feared now. NV5600 from my understnding is a much stronger transmision then the 4500. I'd go with the 5600 but just be worn its going to be expensive to work on.

I read some were that some one was able to get a remanufacture nv5600 for $2300. Look in the 24v drivetrain section, there was a discusion going on about it just yesterday.

Hope it helps

My 5600 has yet to have 1 problem. I absolutley love it. While my truck is nowhere near the power that your truck is making, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. I can also attest that if you tow, this tranny is night and day (better) than the 4500. It's also a behemoth, so eat your wheaties when you plan on doing the swap. I believe you'll like it.

The main thing about the 5600 is 4th gear. Its an even spread from 2nd to 4th gear at 500 rpms difference. So basically you can run whatever rpms you want.

I believe the late model NV5600 had better lube channels in the tranny than the earlier ones. Some people added an extra quart of fluid for this. The newer design is supposed to eliminate any problems. Reman trannies are supposed to have this done. There is also a larger input shaft, I believe on the later models.
Other than that, this is a tank. Do not plan snap shifts. If you stick with the original lube other one with the exacr same specs, they shift OK, for a big tranny.

The nv4500 cost less than half the price to rebuild. I have a nv4500 & do alot of heavy towing. I would really like a nv5600 to swap in its place, because the extra gear really helps when towing really heavy. I wish I could find someone who wanted to swap, I'd do the swap free of charge.

This swap is going to be fairly complex, hope you're up to it. First of all, the tranny will have to be out of a 98.5 or 99 truck because I believe in 2000 they changed the size of the input shaft. Secondly, you will probably have to custom fab a crossmember or modify the crossmember of the donor truck. I also think that the differential center sections are on opposite sides of the front axle between 1st and 2nd generations, so this raises concerns on transfer cases. You will most likely have to find an adapter to mount your tcase up to the new tranny. Then you get into hydraulic clutch issues. I'm certainly not trying to discourage you, just maybe pointing some things out that you may not have realized. The swap is most definately possible, there are just some speed bumps along the way. Also, just remembered, you will most likely have to have driveshafts modified to proper lengths for the new setup as well. Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted!

ps. Southbend Clutch is the only way to go on heavily modded manual tranny trucks.

Hey JAX thanks for your input. I have already thought out the process and im definanlty up to it. I've done quite a bit of metal fabbing for years and the only hard part for me on this (possible swap) is the clutch pedal assembly and hydrolic stuff but im quite the gearheasd so im sure i can figure it out but we'll see.... im not gonna jump on this without a lot of thought looking into. thanks

If I were you I would also get the short shift kit for it. Shifting is a lot quicker those times that you really want them to be quick.

exactly what he said, hard to find parts for anymore. from what ive seen they are strong than a 5 speed. I had the NV5600 in my 05 and it was around 500hp and it did hold up well

If you don't take it, give me the contact info and I will, but yes, you should at least buy it, imo.
