New truck, need answers

I am looking at a 1999 dodge cummins, and if i decide to buy it, itll be my first diesel to buy. These are the aftermarket parts it has: "bd special turbo, banks waste gate, bd 120hp injectors, afe intake manifolds, k&n colds air intake, air dog 150 fuel pump, new vp44, also has the banks big hoss black tuner on it, 4 inch straight exhaust with 8 inch mbrp tip, trans was a ats built trans but recently changed all internals to sun coast with there extreme rebuild kit and the bd torque converter cost about 5k and was done about 6000 miles ago". Some of the questions i had was will it roll coal a lot? Will be be reliable? And if anyone could tell me an average HP it would be pushing? Thanks!

The Air Dog pump, new vp44, and the transmission work would generally improve the truck's reliability, assuming everything was installed correctly and they didn't do stupid things adding these mods ("custom" wiring that looks like a rat's nest comes to mind).

Hard to estimate what it might dyno at, but you should definitely have some good power with the mods mentioned. If everything runs the way it should, you should be very happy with it.

Alright thanks. Can you explain what the vp44 does to me? I'm not too familiar with that. Also do you think it would roll a lot of coal? Thanks,
Jake

With Banks stuff it shouldn't black anyone out, that's his claim to fame.

As much as everyone loves to see one rolling coal, it is really detrimental to our hobby, clean is good today.

I agree with Pat--you're probably not going to be filling intersections with black smoke if you romp on the throttle, but at the same time, with those injectors you should be able to put out a bit. I'm also in the clean camp though--I think ultimately it's best not to give the greenies more ammo to complicate our diesel engines with more EPA crap.

On the vp44, that's the high pressure injection pump. The fact that the truck you're looking at has a new pump is a good thing because with an old pump you wouldn't have any idea what kind of history it has. This pump tends to just up and die with no warning when it's time is done, so new is good.

lots of black smoke equals big egt's (also wastes fuel). I never like BD120's for injectors myself. The head takes more of the abuse from egt's in a VP engine. Seen stuck valves (broken valves), cracked head, burnt out valves.

A good 7*10 145 deg hole injector with at leat 300bar is fairly clean, but is low on power. I've run probably few dozen injectors over the years. You could try pop testing the BD's and let us know what you find out.

The wire tap also get the old girl smoken. I just 1X1 on my edge comp box, as I have way to much injector for my stock turbo.

Winter time I run 6*13's, 280 bar. More smoke but more fun.

I'm runnin a stock 027 VP (not a rebuilt VP with 300000miles on it) of a roll over 01 truck

This is just my opinion but I would never buy a used truck that some kid has put performance parts on. Just think of it like this, the only reason it has a new VP-44 and rebuilt tranny is because he HAD to because he trashed the IP and tranny! I'm not against mods but rather buy a used truck that is mostly stock from an older more mature man. Black smoke is cool at tractor pulls but will made you look like a complete punk if you drive around town smoking up all the intersections, and guess what? The only people who will think you're cool for doing that are other 16 year old kids. Torque impresses me, not unburnt fuel coming out my tail pipe in the form of black smoke...

Also it being a 99 and has all the mods what's the reason it's for sale? My bests a got either a split 53 block or one that's been locked stitched...99 is the black sheep of our family the casting of the blocks were not up to par, check the engine out for a 53 stamp...

Any body putting in a new IP and a rebuilt trans into any used truck (probably the trucks worth $5-8K anyways), just prior to purchase is doing you a major favor regardless of the previous owner age. My truck been bombed since day one it rolled off the dealer lot. Still going strong, I even pushed nearly 700rwhp for several years, broke a few transmission in half but thats a different story.

I know lots of high miler 53 blocks thats pushing over 500rwhp. I wouldn't lose sleep over the crack rumor. Its just like the famous 6.7L head gasket failure or 06/07 piston ring breakage rumor or 03/04 head valve seat dropping out rumors.
