New ATS ValveBody and Gauges

Hi all! I am new to the group, but I have been doing a lot of reading on here lately. I have a couple of questions.

1. I just ordered an ATS valve body for my 2001 cummins, because I was having shifting problems, and my tranny guy said that was the problem. But the sales guy said that the torque converter would go out very soon. Has anyone else had this problem with an automatic? I am very easy on it, and all I ever tow is a 6000lb travel trailer. The truck only has 65000 miles on it. Should I really be concerned about the converter?

2. Next, I was curious what optimal gauge readings would be for the egt, considering I have a pre-turbo gauge.

Thanks, and just wanted to let everyone know that this is a great resource we have here!!!

John

Hello Jbevly welcome to the site. Fill in your Signature section of your profile with the particulars of your truck (year, tranny, and any mods) so people familiar with your truck can help and you won’t have to type it in every time.
Our trannys are a weak part in the drive train. I’m surprised you are having a problem with the shifting already with just 65000 miles. What problems are you having? There are a lot of things that can cause shifting problems, some in the tranny and some not. The TV cable adjustment being one of them. Another problem could be the APPS needs to be reset. Try this and see if it helps. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1
There is also an electronic noise problem on some trucks and a filter sold by DTT will fix that $35.00. I would also check the speed sensor connection and have it checked.
What exactly were you seeing? There is a lot of knowledge on this board and the answers to these questions might save you some money.

I have a 2001, quad cab, with an ez edge chip. I will check what you told me too, but I did already order the valve body. But the sales guy made me really start worrying about my T/C. It basically does not want to go down to first gear, has some eratic shifting, and sometimes when coming to a stop, I feel a bump, nudge, almost if someone is hitting me from behind softly. Any ideas?

If the torque converter is going bad one of the first signs is, it will shudder (shake the truck) when going into overdrive. I feel most of your problems are adjustment related I could be wrong (some of the other guys will be along before too long).
The valve body and TC are good upgrades to have for your truck I just hate to see you do them for the wrong reason.
I would wait till I heard from some of the more experienced guys on these tranny issues before I’d spend any more money.
A new TC and VB will really wake up the truck though, especially with the EZ.

Nope, no shudder, the higher gears shift just fine, like normal. But I am going to be sure and check out all the connections.

On your problem of not dropping down to first......If you are pulling up to a stop (for example) and go to take off and the trans is stuck in second (usually feels like lack of power) and you pull it down to first manually and it shifts down ok, I would suspect the governor transducer and solenoid. Sometimes they set a code, sometimes not. They run about 175$ and if you can change a trans filter, you can install these parts (they're mounted to the valve body). On the aftermarket telling you your Torque Converter is doomed that is like calling psychic hotline and asking if you are going to die. They're just playing the odds on your TC failing, and with your mods it's possible that you may hasten it's death. Most of the time any TC prob will often involve the lockup clutch. The gears will shift fine, but when the lockup clutch engages you will feel a "shudder". This is most often aggrivated by towing. I just put a stock TC in my truck. I was hoping to go aftermarket this fall, but I didn't have the $$$ to go that route vs. a $50 dollar deductable.

Get rid of the stock convertor and go with a lower stall. You love it.

I know this has nothing to do with it...or does it? I cleaned out my K&N filter, and the truck started shifting great!!! Has anyone else come across this? It's in the shop today getting the new ATS valve body regardless!!!

Just an update, I added the new ATS valvebody, with the old electornics. Did not realize the valvebody did not come with them. The shifts are smooth, with just enough punch. I still had my problems, so I took it back to the shop and changed had them change the electronics. It is running great now, even in OD the whole truck just seems to run smoother, it might just be my imagination, but nonetheless I am thrilled!!!!

Jbevly,
I had the exact same problem as yours except mine started at about 50,000. It was a very intermittent problem to say the least. I took it to the dealer and they had the diagnosis in about 45 min. It was the governor transducer and solenoid. You know what they say about advice, but I would take the truck to the dealer and get that governor transducer and solenoid replaced. Then put your ATS goodies in. Keep us up to date. Scott
