Is my new Autometer pyro gauge junk?

I have done a lot of searching and reading on Autometer pyro's and the bad batch that got through. I have 3 Autometer gauges, pyro, boost, and trans. they are Z-series. My Pyro seems to be accurate with temperature, but slow responding. Since this is my first pyro, I'm not sure how fast it should react. At idle I run 275-300, @ 60mph, locked in 4th I run 550-600, WOT is 1100-1200.

From what I have read these #'s seem about right for my mods, maybe a little low on the high end.

What has me wondering is I can be locked up in 3rd and floor it at 35mph and the pyro does not move for 2-3 seconds. Is this normal? If I run it up to 70 or 80 and then lift off completely my pyro will still be going up for 2-3 seconds(100-150 degrees more).

It just seems like my pyro is slow to respond. I don't want to melt this engine because of a bad gauge. So what are your guys experiences? Does my gauge seem slow?

Thanks for the help!

Fred

afew seconds no.. unless its also slowly going from 300* to 700* when youknow your putting out like 1200*. mine normally move fairly quikly a when this happens, it finds itway closeto the temp, then finds it way to the proper temp. i think if it takes 6 or more seconds to even begine to move, then there may be a problem. only on a digital
readout would see a very quik response due to the fact there is not physical needle to move!

I have a Autometer pyro in my truck and it seems to do its job correctly for me. When I'm running through the gears the needle is quick to jump around 1000 degrees, if I'm in a hurry. Even when down shifting the pyro is 1/2 as slow.

The bottom line is all pyro meters should give you quick temp readings. I think you might have some type of pyro malfuntion or your truck just makes it read different from ours?

The needle should begin to move almost instantly when you floor it in 3rd at 35 mph. It doesn't necessarily have to shoot up, but you should see it begin to move. Mine doesn't stay stationary for a few seconds when I get on it. If you have your probe mounted after the turbo, that could be the reason. I have mine mounted pre-turbo.

Where do you have the probe installed?

My Probe is mounted pre-turbo. Its right in the middle, between the wall and the divider. It is not touching any metal. I will pull it out this morning and see where the tip is in the stream. I'm assuming it should be right in the middle?

I just took out my probe and measured it. From the top of the manifold the probe goes down 1 1/8". If you take into account the approx. 3/8" thickness of the manifold, the probe is 3/4" in the exhaust stream. To me this seems correct and about 1/2 way in. Am I wrong?

That is correct... I have an Isspro that is behaving as yours is. The tech guy where I bought it that I talked to tole me it was normal , I called back, got the owner, and a new probe, amp box, and gauge. No charge, I just had to promise to return the box with a probe, box, and gauge. So I am anxiously awaiting my friend the big brown man!

I have the ultra lite series Autometer......and mine does the same thing. Jumps between the numbers instead of a nice smooth sweep. It's done it since it's brand new. It's accurate as heck, but the needle is just slow to move.

My first Autometer gauge stuck too. The needle bounced around instead of smooth changes. Sent it back to Autometer and got a free replacement. No questions asked. They have great customer service. Just go to their website and contact them via email.
